Man not only is that programme a pain to uninstall but holly crap does it come with fifty mini programmes that all sit there tracking your movements, displaying adverts, updating Go!Zilla's announcements.. and on and on and on. Also the whole interface is shocking, I wish it would take a hint from the dinosaurs and die. Otherwise Norton is not too bad, as long as you keep it on a short leash and don't put all the options on then your system stays fine. As for people who get viruses all the time... wake up and listen to Christian. All those Warez sites filled with porn will give you infections and email attachments are as bad as the red light district in Amsterdam. Someone here at work is STILL trying to get rid of the last remnants of this thing. It's a blue monkey that wanders your desktop freely, telling bad jokes and generally being more annoying than the @#()$#@() paper clip. He also offers to help you find the best deal on things, in other words he is a self installed spammer that redirects you to his website at random intervals. ICQ keeps showing me ads regarding it and a couple of my favourite websites pop-up "download your new best friend" adverts which drive me bananas (excuse the pun). When I first saw it I thought "oh god, Barney has morphed into a gorilla, save us all!". The really sad bit about all of this? A friend, new to computers, thinks it is really cute and wants to install it. Although I did find the Go!Zilla functionality useful. Anyone know of a less annoying app which will allow me to schedule a list of downloads. Paul Watson26-Sep-01 1:20 Paul Watson 26-Sep-01 1:20  GetRight is another Go!Zilla like app. Schedule downloads, resume etc. But I have not used it for awhile so it may also have gone the spyware route of Go!Zilla. They should integrate it into Internet Explorer... IE's download "capabilities" are pretty horrendous (though this is not saying other browsers are any better). But I will bet if MS integrated a download app into IE they would be sued for some or other reason by some or other company. I downloaded a large part of a 20MB or so download, and them my connection was lost (damn you BT). When I dialed in again I was expecting to ahve to start from scratch, but when I clicked on the link IE resumed the downlaod from where it got to. I haven't seen this feature documentated, but IE stores the file in a temp directory whilst downloading, together with basic information about it like the name and source. This would enable it to resume the download if necessary. so might be useful for viewing BritneyNekkid.jpg It's a lot quicker just to get a magnifing glass and a barbie doll... they both have the same plastic content, and look the same. For outbound traffic I use ZoneAlarm Pro. It is scary how many programs actually tries to communicate over the internet w/o any hint. Good thing Mr ZoneAlarm gives me the option to say no. I also require IE to prompt me for scripts and activex controls. Maybe I'm paranoid, but I still haven't had any viruses since '93 (Remember the "Jerusalem" virii family? My desktop machine (an IBM Aptiva) came preinstalled with Norton Antivirus but it never did really get on with the Display Driver (an integrated Rage Turbo 3D Pro). When I upgraded the Aptiva to Win2K the copy of Norton that came with it wouldn't work and I was sufficiently FiretrUCKed off with it by then that I just went out and got McAffee. No problems since. I haven't had any problems with ZoneAlarm. It's simple and seems to be effective - I ran a test using Gibson Research's grc.com and was impressed enough with the results not to bother trying anything else. I already had McAfee running happily on my laptop, so I decided to standardise. The problems with Norton under '98 just tipped the balance.... It wont accept my password(I use the same password for everything so I know its not me). The only programs it'll let go online are IE and outlook. It blocks the rest. It takes very little of system resources and never did cause any problems. Only minor inconvenience is that its updates are big to download (~720KB). Before that I tried AVP from Kaspersky Labs (www.kasperskylabs.ru). Probably it's a toughest antivirus app in the world, but it requires a lot of CPU. On PII300 with NT4 it was unbearable to work because of small delays all the time. Also, I'm using Naviscope (www.naviscope.com) for anti-banner/popup windows protection. It runs smoothly with IE5.5 on W2K and wipes out ~95% of banners add from web pages. Unfortunately this project is no longer supported, so I don't know what to do when I'll upgarde from W2K to something else.. I think that nowadays when addware and spamware is so common, there is a real demand for some good anti-add software protection. It's annoying much more than viruses.
