When I turned 50 FB decided I am a pervert and started sending me ads to make it with 20 year old girls. I shared a picture of people dressed in pumpkins and got a ban for nudity but I get ads for insane s3x toys. My wife threw me out 3 years ago and I held it together on the basis I visit every few weeks. I use FB to talk to her and used it this morning to apply to join a band. I stopped using FB seriously 10 years ago when they allowed a far right wing gang to stalk and threaten my kids. I just kind of prod at it now

I have a collection of screenshots from Walmart ads of adult toys that would make a "insert person of choice here" blush. I think it's partly my fault though. I started screwing with their ad algorithms by clicking on everything to see what would happen. 
My latest is checking the Walmart price of Sriracha daily as it shows up in my feed to watch the prices and how that changes. Hint, up on the weekends, down during the week. Sidenote, I never shop at Walmart.

Same. I scroll through and will see 3 ads and 5 suggested posts before I ever see one from someone on my friends list. And to make that worse, it's often days old so its often irrelevant.

I quit Twitter when it became X. But I keep Facebook. It helps me normalize my strange hobbies. I can show my wife a photo of somebody with a closet full of (24) unicycles and explain that only having 5 isn't a big deal. Same thing with my canoe/kayak addition. I also use it to connect to community events to get in and out.
As a general rule, I block any group that was shared in a post. This keeps my feed clean(er). I really only want original content from my friends and family.

I live with my elderly dad, not my wife. Lego is my one stress relief. Building the AT&T walker right now. My estimate is low because I started buying knock off lego, mostly because I got sick of all the missing pieces. Also I can get some out of print sets, like the Death Star.

I loved Lego as a kid, and keep reading about adults still using them as a hobby. I've often thought to myself, wouldn't it be fun if I went back to that myself.

Years ago I used to play The Sims 2, not for the gameplay, but because of the building opportunities the game engine presented. I had houses that had such design complexity they pushed the game, I believe, to its limits, but even then, I thought it was too restrictive. I could never get into Sims 3, and never tried Sims 4. "Real" home building software is just too complex for my liking.
I think there's a real need for some creative outlet. Lego might fulfill that, to some extent, but it just gets crazy expensive if you're serious about it.
I've seen some software decades ago that let you work with virtual Lego, so to speak, but found the controls to be way too difficult to be useful.

Yes, but I'm very proactive in regards of who I follow and I use the block feature a lot.
I will often start following someone for a few weeks/months and then just block them after a while.
I'm very much left leaning, never had an issue with twitter; maybe I'm just not an activist.
I'm still on twitter. I don't follow a lot of political things, so I don't get the crazy stuff.
It's still a good tool for keeping track of the general news instead of needed to browse a dozen of different news sites.
I'm using Facebook a lot less than before, seems my feed is mostly advertisement these days or unrelated accounts and only a handful of people in my (real life) friend list is active.
Same for Instagram, I only follow a few people with similar interests (food and travel) and maybe 4, 5 local celebrities.
Reddit is probably the only "social media" I use frequently (mostly for food and travel and other hobbies).

For me this Lounge is the only social media I post to. I have a FB account but have never posted to it. I only use it to look up other people - and that less than once per year. I only went to LinkedIn to connect with old colleagues - and the only one I kept in touch with has since died (COVID) so I'll drop off that soon.

LinkedIn is good, as far as I am concerned. In a moment of madness a few weeks ago I joined Facebook, and I am getting forty or fifty aggravating emails/notifications a day.

At least we agree on this.  The question is... who's to blame for this? Please don't say Trump though; we're supposed to be smarter than the brainwashing TV. I think a lot of this stems from us spending less time outside and talking to other humans, as simple as that may seem.

Well, trump has given voice to modern Fascism obviously. He's enabled hate and made it ok. But he's not to blame for this.. It's the internet . People in other countries can easily call my phone and live outside the law, or try to approach me on the internet. It's a failure of law to keep up with technology.

We're going to strongly disagree on this one man. Very strongly. He embodies the American spirit. Does he lack social tact? Sure. But, he's the best thing that's happened in a long while. People have genders. People have pronouns. People are not trees. If you talk to someone, they have a name and a pronoun. Every mental health professional agrees being trans is not a mental illness and every biologist agrees sex and gender are spectrums (ignoring the binary of body parts) and being trans is normal

While those men call me a beta and so on, I am just kind to people. I was pushed into an open marriage and tons of women were interested in me, because I was not a prick

Facebook wants everyone on their platform to feel safe, which means 'never challenged'. I disagree. It's good to see you again, too, and I am happy to know and talk to people who disagree with me. That's just it though, this has nothing to do with my sexual insecurity. I promise I've been around the blook way more than most. I do not agree with the philosophy at all that a man can become a woman. He can be girly and that's cool, but it doesn't make him an actual woman. The false credibility of fake professors means nothing. College has gone to crap. It's a joke. It's insanity IMO. This is something no amount of banter will convince me of. Well, sorry to hear they're being harassed man. Children should never have to take the burden of adults being... well... silly. No matter what you know. As far as the second point, it comes back to the fundamental disagreement. It's not lifesaving anything. It's the mutilation of children while they're still naive enough to believe anything an adult tells them. You can't vote, but you can get an operation without parental consent? They're kids. For all they know Santa is real and they're Captain Crunch. We'll most likely never agree on this, but I don't think it's wrong to say kids have no idea what they want. It's the adults pushing an agenda on them. So, there's no harm in waiting until they're old enough to really decided what they want... not what the parents tell them to want.

But because you live in right wing echo chambers, you think that's what gender affirming care is, so you support ending gender affirming care, which doesn't end something we never did, but does end mental support and medication that is life saving.

That being said, that's good to know. IMO a child should not be allowed to make life changing choices like that. They can't drink, smoke, vote, drive and still eat their boogers. They're kids ya know. They'll change anything on a whim.
