I am writing software since 35 years. As an electronics engineer I am focusing on embedded software development for medical products.
I think most programming languages have a sense. If programming is a passion for someone the language is not important. The language most times depends on what you want to do. For Excel macros you will need BASIC, for World of Warcraft Addons you will need Lua. For games or driver development you will need C,C++ and Assembler.
My languages are: C, C++, C#, Assembler, LabView, Basic, VB, VHDL, Lua, Pascal and ADA.
