You can choose what you really want and it's easy. Even if you don't know much about hardware (I am a software devellopper), it's easy. I bought all my pieces from ncix.com, I found the best price on the net for a canadian company, received all my good within a week and everything was working fine without a problem ! With a laptop though I realise it is a lot more involved but can it be done and if not will it ever be possible? The boards are smaller, and there isn't many pieces avaible yet and you would end up with the same cie pieces (90%) just like if you bought it directly from that cie. But the main problem, is the case. If you watch the way laptops are built, all the pieces are different, the dvd-cd-rom drivers, hard-disk, cpu etc... are not always at the same place, so not all the pieces fits anywhere. And on a laptop, it's essentially only a big motherboard that have the graphic, sound, network etc... all together. So you would only be choosing your motherboard, your driver and your hard-disk, and to choose your keyboard and lcd screen with your case. So in the end, would you really save, would all the troubles makes something bigger ? Not for now, may be in the futur. But there is no demands for it so no cie or shops are offering it. Most people who buy a laptop, use it for work or study, so you need something to use it fast without assle cause you don,t have time to bug on it. And also because I find liquid cooling to be too much for my needs right now ! Also, don't know if you had read it, but one company is working on a PCI slot card that would have 1 or 2 processor incorporate with it. You would be able to do 50gigaflops with those things. They will cost around 50,000$ cause that's an high performance board to work on data. But I am sure some cie will build the same thing with lower cost processor and you could add more processor on it, so it could run like a normal computer, no need of new os or anything, just add the drivers and you have a duel-processor ! It's work the same was a graphic card work. (I think I got an idea for a new cie, who wanna join). My job normally has something to do with technical computer sciense (that's why I need to know much about hardware). Building your own computer usually gives you a better price/quality than when you would buy a Dell or Packard Bell computer. One of them is a PowerMac G4, dual 1GHz processors, 1 Gig RAM, 17" LCD monitor. Perfect system for video editing. The other system is a Powerbook G4 1.33GHz notebook with a 12" screen. Its going to be an XBox or PS2. Then a PC & Game cube, and a Mac is at the bottom of the pile for gaming. Dell Michael P Butler1-Nov-04 2:40 Michael P Butler 1-Nov-04 2:40  Both my laptop and desktop are Dell machines. I've been buying Dell since 2001 when I got a second hand Dell Laptop. Never had any problems with them that wasn't self inflicted. Before that I used to get custom built machines from a local one man shop. He eventually went out of business because he couldn't match the prices of the bigger stores. A shame, as he was a top quality engineer who gave excellent customer service. Building from scratch is no cheaper than buying from some of the bigger stores or mail order. The only advantage is you really get the system you want. No need to compromise with getting great graphics but no DVD-RW etc. Have it all I have 2 PC's both built from scratch, both have never given me any problems at all. I must admit to liking Dell stuff though. I used to use a Dell desktop in my last place of employment and have a second hand Dell Lattitude laptop which still runs perfectly. I dont think i would buy a brand desktop for personal use though. Jon Re: Dell Giles6-Nov-04 2:40 Giles 6-Nov-04 2:40  Thats exactly why I do it for my home PC's. I get exactly the components I want. e.g. a dual DVI graphics card, or a particular mother board, with the right expandability or chipset. No way I would build them for a company, though at work we do have a guy who builds our workstations, though they are all pretty meating machines (dual xeon's) running 6 monitors each, so in this case we want a specialist to do it for us, not a Dell. Saying that I did own a Dell, and it was a good workhorse, but inside it was so custom, upgrades were painful. It ended up being a complete throwaway box, as only the hard drive could be salvaged. Everything else would not fit a standard PC. The case was the most non complient, which was a shame becuase it was solid. Well, it start out as... Gary R. Wheeler1-Nov-04 2:09 Gary R. Wheeler 1-Nov-04 2:09  a Micron, Pentium II 266 Mhz w/ 128Mb RAM, 20G hard drive, CD reader, floppy, Sound Blaster Live, 56K modem. The only thing left from the original machine is the sound card and the case (I've even replaced the power supply). Currently, it's a Pentium III, 600 MHz, 256Mb, 20Gb hard drive, 75 Gb hard drive, CD writer, DVD reader, Intel 10/100 NIC, no modem. Pretty sad, compared to the 4GHz, 1G RAM, 200 Gb behemoths some folks run. Software Zen: delete this;
