Hi,
I'm building a program that needs to constantly update using a timer.
In order to make the updating exclusive to the rest of the program, I want to do it on a different thread.
How would I go about adding an event to another thread?
Is it as simple as adding the event and method to the timer in the new thread?

The way I do it is to use the backgroundworker and use the reportprogress event to send back messages from my main thread.

Hey Guys,
I'm writing a section in my C# app that allows the user to add a text object that I've written. I am storing the rendered text in a bitmap so GDI+ won't be drawing text everytime the screen needs to be refreshed. Here's the problem:
I have resize handles that allow the user to expand the area to accept a bigger font size. I want the bitmap to only be the demensions of the MeasureString() method. When using the MeasureString() method, I get different returns on the width when the user expands the resize handles to the right. The text attributes haven't changed!
Here's an example that will return two different Size values:

I have tried Perrie Arnold's approach of measuring strings that he proposed in his Code Project article, but doesn't change anything.
Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,
it is only natural that different rectangles (areas) result in different sizes:
MeasureString and DrawString apply word wrapping when the maximum width would be
exceeded; so providing a wider area is likely to result in a larger width and a
smaller height.
If you want to check visually, perform DrawString under both circumstances.

I'm not sure if you read my example but what I had demonstrated was the exact same text and both bounds widths would have been plenty wide to accept the text on one line. I realize that word wrapping can occur for long strings but this example shouldn't do that.
Any other ideas?

Hi,
your example wasn't clear to me, you did not show the values you got for s1 and s2;
and I don't know whether wrapping occurs or not.
If you allow for a few spare pixels, in my experience MeasureString very well predicts
what DrawString will do, provided you give them the exact same job (string, font, width,
etc). (There is at least one CP article explaining minor errors in MeasureString, hence
the spare pixels; these errors never bothered me).
If you need more help, please provide more details, actual values; also I suggest you
look at the DrawString results, and if relevant show it to us too.

Just a question (or opinions),
In Unix I can "tail" a file, whereby I can dynamically see what is being written to the file in real time (explaination is for those who don't know!).
Can something like this be acheived with C# and a windows form?

Maybe yes, maybe no.
Text files are (generally) sequential rather than indexed.
Without an index you can't just jump to a "line" and read it; you need to read until you find what you want.

Yes, if the file is not very huge (hint for very huge: size greater than 75% of your RAM), use File.ReadAllLines method to store the data of file in a string array, and depending on the input from the user (or whatever) display the line.

The third answer you got was the right one, I just want to add, this code does not change if you're working on a console app, because it has nothing to do with the presentation part of the program.

Unable to install and run .Net application which uses COM Interop. Please offer suggestions.
The Following message occurs on the target machine:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.ComException(0x80040112): Creating an instance of the COM component with CLSID {248DD896-BB45-11CF-9ABC-0080C7E7B78D } from the IClassFactory failed due to the following error: 80040112
At Esc.Tos.Utilities.TCP.escTCP..ctor()
At clsTCP..ctror()
At mdlMain.ConfigureGlobalItems(frmMain theForm)
At frmMAin..ctor()
At Program.Main()
Of course the application runs dandy on the development box, and other development boxes.
Background and useful information:
1) Com object 248DD896-BB45-11CF-9ABC-0080C7E7B78D is the Winsock v.6 control.
2) On the target machine there is application A and application B
Application A is a VB6 application which uses said COM object and sends TCP Messages
Therefore, I assume that com object is correctly install and functional.
Application B is My .Net application and throws the above error.
Things I have tried:
1) Copy OCX locally and reregister
2) Run RegASM on the Interop Assemblies
3) Clean the registry
4) Validated the Interop code is pointing to the correct OCX. (using Lutz)
5) Installed applicaiton onto alternate development box using xcopy and life is good.

Yeah, don't use COM Interop.

Install VB6 tools on the machine you need to deploy.....it will do all what is necessary to run it!

VB6 Tools? I am not familar with that product, Could you include a link. Googling it gives me ... lots of similar stuff.

I found that in Visual Studio 6 installation once i needed!
The issue is with registry entries, if you run VS6 installation and install only Tools from it, hopefully the problem will be solved.

Alright, here is the solution. There is a licenes registry key missing. The most likely violates some eula somewhere. so use with caution. but adding this key will reactiviate the winsock.ocx

I thought I would also mention that this sample code below for win32 c# does nothing. It runs but no message is displayed in the console. I'm using VS 2005. I find this example all over the net.
