There are times when it's nice to be able to tell someone you didn't: like/agree with/approve of his message without necessarily considering it a site-abusive post and wanting it removed. Even more importantly, it's nice to be able to high-five someone when they have said something brilliant. Choosing where to draw the line isn't. We can't just say "We'll only send 10,000 emails an hour, first in, best dressed". There are options, though, such as saying you only get an email if you've visited that forum in the last N months. Or I could sell a kidney and just buy a bunch of servers and some serious bandwidth.
