May be I prefer Assembled Computer as It is Cheap and more PowerFul then any branded computer in market.

i bought my computer in Nov 2001 with configuration
PIV 1.5 Ghz 512 Mb ram and 32 mB graphic Card.
it cost me around rs 45000 or 1000$ and same computer from branded Vendor will cost me around 90000 or 2000$
i think i have done better deal

We don't need no stinkin' corporations to tell us how or what to put in our computers!!
Plus, it's much easier to upgrade when you've built the machine yourself. Incidently, the only original piece of hardware in my current incarnation is my floppy drive. Maybe it's time to upgrade that as well.

6 years now I have been using the same PC. Built from scratch the first time and it is still running. Every now and then I treat it to an upgrade, like the shiny new processor I just installed a few months ago. It works and gets the job done, although the keyboard is starting to fade

I just remember all the bad things people would do in C++. I did enjoy developing in it though because I could always show very elegant designs and patterns in it because it lacked so much support and people knew so little about how to do proper designs in C++. Referenced counted pointers in C++ still elude many. However I don't think I would use the words you did to describe C++. Hey at least VS.NET 2003 is something like 95%+ ISO C++ Compliant.

I think it's the best way to have the best components.
You can choose what you really want and it's easy. Even if you don't know much about hardware (I am a software devellopper), it's easy.
I bought all my pieces from ncix.com, I found the best price on the net for a canadian company, received all my good within a week and everything was working fine without a problem !

What is the deal with building your own laptop? Desktops I have done myself and done right it is the better way.
With a laptop though I realise it is a lot more involved but can it be done and if not will it ever be possible?
I ask because I just got my first laptop and while it's a lovely machine I would have made a few small changes if I had built it myself.

I am sure that could be done too.
Main problem is that it's take way more skills. The boards are smaller, and there isn't many pieces avaible yet and you would end up with the same cie pieces (90%) just like if you bought it directly from that cie.
But the main problem, is the case. If you watch the way laptops are built, all the pieces are different, the dvd-cd-rom drivers, hard-disk, cpu etc... are not always at the same place, so not all the pieces fits anywhere. And on a laptop, it's essentially only a big motherboard that have the graphic, sound, network etc... all together. So you would only be choosing your motherboard, your driver and your hard-disk, and to choose your keyboard and lcd screen with your case.
So in the end, would you really save, would all the troubles makes something bigger ? Not for now, may be in the futur. But there is no demands for it so no cie or shops are offering it. Most people who buy a laptop, use it for work or study, so you need something to use it fast without assle cause you don,t have time to bug on it. (time is money)

Yeah, I can see it now.... get a nice 3800+ AMD 64bit processor, 3gb 675Mhz PC5400 DDR2 ram, 40gb SCSI HDD, 250gb IDE HDD, ATI Radeon x800 and good liquid cooling system. Then overclock that baby. *drools*

I am not on overcloacking, cause I prefer to have something stable and have more fiability. And also because I find liquid cooling to be too much for my needs right now !
Also, don't know if you had read it, but one company is working on a PCI slot card that would have 1 or 2 processor incorporate with it. You would be able to do 50gigaflops with those things. They will cost around 50,000$ cause that's an high performance board to work on data. But I am sure some cie will build the same thing with lower cost processor and you could add more processor on it, so it could run like a normal computer, no need of new os or anything, just add the drivers and you have a duel-processor ! It's work the same was a graphic card work. (I think I got an idea for a new cie, who wanna join).

I also build them myself, I know both a lot about hardware and about software. My job normally has something to do with technical computer sciense (that's why I need to know much about hardware).
Building your own computer usually gives you a better price/quality than when you would buy a Dell or Packard Bell computer.

Probably because most of us develop with and for Microsoft technologies. Not terribly Mac friendly (though I reckon Apple does top-class work).
