More often I'll listen to hard rock(eighties metal, NIN, ministry, some new rock) or 'techno' (FSOL, Coldcut, Robert Miles), but I could just as easily listen to blues, 'Lo-fi Indie', a little rap or maybe some classical, it all depends.
Today it's been Megadeath's Rust in Peace, Pearl jam's Live At Benaroya Hall, and now Wagon Christ's Sorry I Make You Lush

I have tinnitus[^] as a result of working for several years in the computer center at the local air force base back during the 80's. The center consisted of a first floor of office space, and a second floor that was one large computer room. This room, which was approximately a half acre in size, was filled with a variety of mainframes, superminicomputers, and even a Cray X-MP, along with related peripherals. The peripherals included the old 'washing machine' 300 megabyte disk pack drives, line printers the size of small trucks, and keypunch machines and readers. The air conditioning for all of this equipment added to the noise level as well. The end result was was phenomenal. The average noise level was bad enough that you couldn't carry on a conversation without shouting.
Today, whenever I'm in a quiet place, I hear a high pitched whine. That's the tinnitus. I have to have a fan or some other white noise source running at night to be able to sleep.
I would strongly suggest that you wear ear protection if you work in a server room for long periods. My tinnitus is of an annoyance level; fortunately, it doesn't seriously affect my lifestyle.

I wear a pair of noise cancelling head phones. With the music as well, can't hear a damn thing outside of my little world.

What can be done about tinnitus? Do you take meds or do anything to lessen it? Can't find anything much on that website.
Also do you notice that it gets worse/noticeable the more tired you get?

Mine has never been severe enough that I looked for a medical treatment for it. The little I've read about it implies that there isn't any kind of corrective measure, just treatment for the symptoms.

Hmmm. I notice it mostly if I'm trying to sleep, and there isn't background noise sufficient to block it out. It seems to get worse and worse then, but that could just be my perception (and irritation at being unable to sleep).

I did some researching as well and only came up with treatments for symptoms (head-ace, dizzyness, etc) My doc says there's not much you can do to "make it go away" but if you continue to be exposed to constant loud noise then it WILL get worse.
I got it very suddenly after a Motley Crue concert back in the late 80's. My ears were ringing as always after a metal concert but when my ears were still ringing weeks later I got very concerned. When the doctors chedked me out they said I had a 10% hearing loss from it. But did that stop me from playing drums in a metal band.
It gets really bad if I've had way too much to drink.;P
I've been sleeping with a fan on for years now even in the middle of winter when it's -20 F.

... and some of the people on my hall are NOISY. The good thing is that I can close my door if it gets to me.
If I'm doing monotonous tasks, music is great. For coding and especially for designing, though, I find music distracts me more than it helps me.
An expert is somebody who learns more and more about less and less, until he knows absolutely everything about nothing.

I hear all sort of music, loud or not, downloaded from free sites, from p2p, or my own bought CDs. With headphones of course 
It is especially useful to isolate from the noises in the office.
And it is a good way to test new bands while working :-P

Other than that. whatever music I can get into my collection - which I like of course!
But my selection has not change much in the last 2 years as I have not got anything new at all.

Oh.. Symbol tunes. If I listen closely, I can sometimes hear the blipps and chirps of Symbols and Metrologics. Sometimes I wonder if the office has been invaded by R2's.. (I'm in the POS business)
