i have a problem with my outlook express in windows xp. when i get new messages, the number of new message appear next to the inbox icon. but when i click the inbox icon to read the mail, there are no new mail in my inbox and number of the new message change to 1. it seem that there is something error in my computer. does any one know about this problem?

Hello,
Is there any way to programatically restore a foreign application from the system tray? (the same as, in most cases, double clicking the tray icon)
All I have found are ways to maximize/minimize windows that are already running out of the tray...

Hey everyone,
Well I am fairly new to linux and I have been messing around with Red Hat. I have been looking for information on the web but just cant seem to find it. I am trying to access data on my windows XP partition while I am in Linux. I see online you are able to do this with FAT32 but not NTFS. Is there anyway to access my NTFS data from within Linux without recompiling the kernal? Thanks for all of your help!

As for the reason why this is made so difficult: specifics of VFAT and MSDOS are fairly well known to all. NTFS is less known because Microsoft is keeping this information a bit secret  .
Oh, make sure you download the correct rpm for your distro, maybe you have redhat 8 instead of 9 (link on first comment).

Is there an way to change the behaviour of 'maximize' function for application windows?
In the past with small screens of 14", it made sense that maximise would make the application window expand to fill the screen. However, with wide screens, especially with the wide screen format of laptops, I would like the maximise function to expand the vertical size but keep the existing horizontal width of the application window.
Some time ago I saw this functionality on Unix systems that used large screens and have since missed it with Windows. Now that I have a wide-screen laptop, I miss it even more. Without it I am constantly resizing windows and instead of using the 'maximise' shortcut. It is easier to use to the 'maximize' shortcut.

hi, when we start windows 2000 (pro, or server) we will place at the login dialog box. we have to press ctrl + alt + del to logon to windows. that dialog box has the picture of logo windows 2000. does anyone know who to change this logo? i want to use my family photo at that login dialog box instead of the microsoft logo.

I have a device that is that acts as Multiport Communications Port.
Windows XP does not remember the Multiport Communications Port. With Windows 2000, you will only have to go through the process of setting up the device as a Multiport Communications Port once. After that, you can take out the device and put it back in any time and it will remember to recognize the device as a Multiport Communications Port with the same settings. In Windows XP, you will have to install and setup the Multiport Communications Port every time you connect the device to the laptop. 
This also includes every time the machine boots up with the card connected.
Not only that, but Windows XP will also use a different COM port every time you install it because it thinks the previous COM port it was using is still in use.  You can manually change the COM port back to its previous value in the Multiport Communications Port Properties.
How to work around this? Anybody knows?

Can anyone help us with this? We're trying to install SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2003 Server. MSDN says we should be able to complete the install and then update to SP3. When we launch the installer and tell it that we know it's not supported but go ahead anyway, the installer goes away and never comes back. The process remains alive with no activity, but doesn't install or give any additional messages. We can't get an installer CD with SP3 already applied, of course, so we're unable to get the SQL Server installed.
Has anyone seen this? Solved it? Have some consoling words of wisdom?

Hi, i use to face this problem before. try to check the solution in microsoft knowledge base www.microsoft.com/support.
as far as i remember the article in knowledge base state that you need to install windows xp first and install sql server with its service pack. test it if it working properly then upgrade your windows xp to windows server 2003. then everything is working fine. try it and hope it work.

Thanks - we checked the MS KB's but it says we should be able to do the install on a fresh Win2003 server. We can't deinstall the server and install XP to try this - the server's already up and running.
We're faced with how to get SQL Server 2000 on a running Win 2003 Server.....

Since I've installed visio 2003 on my machine ( the tech guy did ), my system is behaving weird, mostly the language selector is acting up, there seems to be 2 of them, one that looks xp-ish, and the other one looks w2k-ish (!); and the "selector" does not show up when clicked on it to change language ( keyboard layout ).
On top of that , outlook misbehaving ...
Is it possible that it was a bad idea to mix'n'match Visio (from office 2003) and the current Office 2000 ?

If any one knows about install shield please help!
I am using Install shield developer 8 SP2 evaluation. I need to create setup such that it checks for the version of IE6, updates if necessary and reboot. After reboot the setup continues in the normal fashion. Then it checks for DotNet Framework 1.1 and MDAC 2.8, Install in necessary. If os is win 98/ME it should reboot before continuing in the same manner as above.

I have the following lines in my .js file.

So, for the 4 executables I invoke, the system executes them on 4 different shells I believe, because I see 4 different blank command prompt screens poping up.
My question is can I have all the executables, executed in a single command prompt screen. So I want to see a single command prompt window, how do I do this?

I'm not sure if this is the right board, so please excuse if not.
I want to have an application started on the ppc just when the ppc is docked to the cradle so just in time with activesync.
I googled a lot, searched and examined the registry but nothing helpful found 
Maybe someone here has the right idea?
The background is that I still need activesync to sync my mail, calendar, ... but I have another application which synchronizes database data.
Is that possible (and how)?

Hi,
I'm running a MS home network and ned to use xcopy to automate a few backup procedures.
The problem is I live in Portugal and the date format used in most computers here is dd-mm-yy: I want to backup files to a low-end pc that works as a backup server, but because its BIOS is so old it won't give me the option to set the date format to other than mm-dd-yy (the default in the US, I guess). This confuses xcopy that mistakenly reports files modified on the same date as having different dates, when using the /d option (only copy newer versions of the file).
Resetting the date format in the newer computers on the network is out of the question, but if I could get my hands on the xcopy (or a xcopy-like) source code I'm sure I could tweak it (in C++) to recognize both date formats...
Any help is appreciated!;P
PS: Strangely, the windows explorer does not misinterpret the date formats when browsing the backup server...

Firstly, the BIOS has nothing to do with date formats. The date is just a number, and will be interpreted by the OS, not the BIOS.
In Windows, you can alter the date format using control panel settings, although it doesn't sound like you need to, since Explorer gives you 'expected' results.
Do you have different system default settings, I wonder? In Win2K and XP, I think you can set the system locale (as well as the user locale) to be non-US, which may then affect the behaviour of XCOPY.
However, I'd guess that XCOPY always uses M-D-Y format for /D:date, as I'm in the UK, and we would use D-M-Y for preference, but it doesn't. Having said that, US English and UK English are almost the same in other respects, so maybe that's wrong.

Well.. I guess you're right. I tried and managed to get the old PC to show up the dates with the right format (using DOS' COUNTRY.SYS) but the problem persists. I checked the very old DOS help command and it says XCOPY uses the date format defined by COUTRY.SYS, but since I'm running the version from one of the newer machines I guess it no longer applies.
I ran a small test on a set of 27 files randomly taken (well.. the shortest in size) from the My Documents folder. I copied them to c:\test and then to \\backupserver\c\test
I then used the dir command on both directories and the result (shown below) was the same, the only difference being the bytes free information.

I ran the dir command directly from the server (Win 95) and the differences were the year format (DD-MM-YY instead of DD-MM-YYYY - could it be some kind of Y2K bug?) and two extra columns containing the DOS name and the extension.
These are the files that xcopy would have copied with the /D /Y /L parameters (copy only newer files, overwrite without asking and list only the files without copying them):

I'm still having the same problem with my Automatic Update system in WinXP. Every single day, sometimes twice a day, the system downloads the exact same patch and waits for me to install it. It's patch #KB835732.
I still don't know whether a virus is deleting this patch everyday or what. All I know is that it insists on installing this patch everyday, and will it will sit there in the systray until I acknowledge it.
I tried installing the patch manually and that didn't work. I updated both my virus scanner and firewall and have run numerous full scans. Still nothing. I'm desperate now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried disabling your antivirus scanner and manually installing the patch while it's disabled? Often AV software will mistake an OS patch for a virus and block its installation, though it may not tell you about it. Obviously, you should re-enable it after the installation is complete. 
Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group.

I am trying to have a timer facility with the following constraints,
1. The call back routine must be processed as fast as possible after the timer expires, though windows is not a RTOS, how close can we achieve this?
2. The callback routine must be run asynchronously. The thread should be able to assign a callback to be run after a particular period of time and continue with its tasks without being bothered to wait on that timer.
Given the choices available in windows, CreateTimerQueue, Multimedia timers, Waitable timers, SetTimer fn. Settimer is a plain fn, which does not guarantee prompt processing (WM_TIMER is has least priority). Timer queue implementation relies on thread pooling concept whose performance is a question when we think about RT performance. Multimedia timers allow only a few functions to be used in the calling function which makes it impossible to use mutex or semaphore fns in it. Waitable timers, block the calling thread.
Is there any other timer / or implementation that would help me achieve the above constraints?

Both use a MultiMedia timer, it trips a heart-beating thread (every millisecond) which: -
1) spins-a-thread(starting at user supplied entry point),
2) causes a function execution(starting at user supplied entry point) or
3) sets an event-flag
as the user has specified. It is accurate to one millisecond.

This is mostly FYI:
For some time I have been unsuccessfully trying to install Windows 2003 on a Asrock K7S8XE MB / AMD 2400+. Also with the patches (applied April 9th)for windows 2000 this machine would no longer boot with that system either. So I concluded something must have been damaged on the board during some power failures (had several light strikes on the power lines this spring.) even with a line conditioner in the circuit. I was wrong, a new board (new rev of same model) had no impact. I have the same mb on several systems and drives in cradles so I can rearrange the system.
I have finally traced both problems this last weekend to a NEC 100Meg Zip drive. I swapped it out with a second drive and also a Iomega 100 and all had the same impact. Recieved a drive io error message and then the machine would crash and restart. Removed the zip drive and all is well. It also works fine with a 250 meg drive.
So I do not know if this is just a freaky combination or the drive in general. Is anyone using 100meg zip drives with other mb's?
I do not mind getting old. It beats all the other options that can think of.
