As someone else suggested, I should use git (or something similar), but the reason I was using a thumb drive (actually a USB nVME drive) for source code is because:

0) I'm running Windows in a VM

1) I needed to be able to work on the code on both a laptop and my desktop

2) I might go weeks without working on one machine or the other

A thumb drive just makes sense (source control makes even more sense - grin). I have no idea what happened because I'm diligent about properly ejecting the usb drive before unplugging it from a given machine. It's been fine for almost two years (maybe I was just pushing my luck though).

As I stated earlier, it looks like I have a reason to use my Synchronicity article. Smile | :)
