I've got colleagues/friends who seriously argues that in ordinary prose, we should stsart enclosing conditions in parentheses, 'If (it is raining), use an umbrella'. It would make the text clearer and less ambiguous, they claim. Seriously.
I counter by pointing out that Pascal didn't require parentheses, yet there was no ambiguiety. But then you have to use a 'then'! my friends argue. To prove their point they dig up a dozen quotes from different prose texts, where recognized authors write sentences of the kind 'If it is raining, use an umbrella'. Which proves that the 'then' is superfluous. Pascal was wrong! Parentheses are far more general that this silly 'then', e.g. you can use the same mechanism for grouping partial conditions as you use for delimiting the full condition.
I am serious: They are serious, insisting on introducing C syntax in prose.
In my younger days, I found it fascinating trying to work out counterarguments to such logic. Now I am so old that I just shake my head in disbelief.

I'm all for formally disambiguating language precedence constructs.
I have a recipe and it says "Wash lemon. Zest, then juice half the lemon".
I always think of this statement in terms of the distributive property:
Zest, then juice half the lemon = (Zest, then juice half) the lemon
= Zest the lemon, then juice half the lemon.
But I'm never really sure. Maybe they actually mean:
Zest, then juice half the lemon = (Zest, then juice) half the lemon
= Zest half the lemon, then juice half the lemon.
It does my head in.
That's like the old joke:
Programmer: I’m heading to the store. Any requests?
Spouse: Pick up a loaf a bread. If they have eggs, get a dozen.
Programmer: OK.
An hour later, Programmer returns home with a dozen loaves of bread.
Spouse: Why’d you buy a dozen loaves of bread?

So ... the best reason for your "good reasons to update" is ... Corel actually fixed some bugs. 
I can't remember that actually happening before, normally they make it more complicated and harder to use, and add bugs. Will wonders never cease?

I'm still on X2, but that's only because I bought it under the influence, otherwise I'd still be with the last Jasc version.
What I do have, though, is the Anim workshop from Jasc, that came with PSP 7 or thereabouts (it's Anim 3.04, which I believe was the last version).
Corel dumped it, but it ain't broke. Just run the installer, and deselect PSP.

BTW: can't win, if they fixed more it's a buggier product, if they fixed less then question are they (volunteers I know) doing their job?

OK - good point.
OK - How about: the cost/bug-fix, for any time period of interest, is much much lower with Gimp 2.

I tried GIMP for windows and got really tired of the crashing. That was a couple of years back...maybe they've fixed it by now.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that has to deal with images and such...a lot lately in fact. 
Paint and the ancient MS Photo Editor still get the job done....mostly cropping/resizing/changing formats.

Don't know - I "grew up" with Paintshop Pro when it was a JASC* product, having switched from Corel Photo-Paint due to the humongous number of bugs it had developed, and finally switched from the final JASC version (10) to Corel X6 because it didn't support Aero so writing manuals was becoming a PITA.
I did try Gimp version one, but frankly it was a puddle of pooh compared to ... well anything, really ... and that put me right off it and I never tried again.
Is Paintshop Pro any good? Damn right it is: think Photoshop without the price, Adobe, or Hipster worship level. 
(They do a free 30 day trial, if you want to try it).
