For the last year I am listening to the large and loud construction site right outside the office. This while trying to decipher the totally weird and convoluted inter-process frameworky error messages in this Python application. If you think that's negative, wait till I get to the negative bits!

lately I've been listening to country music.
I'm no fan of country music and normally won't listen to it, except when working (concentrating) ... in the background it doesn't annoy, distract or make me turn up/down songs I like/don't like, it's just there to kill the silence, and it's proper music by artists with talent & ability.
In terms of music I listen to when I just want music then it's 70's - 90's rock.
long winded draggy tunes annoy me and rapping always give me the sh*ts (can't stand crap that takes forever to go anywhere and/or requires little talent.)
This internet thing is amazing! Letting people use it: worst idea ever!

Online streaming of a version (no talk and only one advertisement each 30 minutes) of the main radio in my region.
They cover a lot of songs in low tempo electronic / chillout. Pretty nice and calm enough to concentrate, but not too quiet to get asleep.

Nothing (or white/pink noise if my surroundings are noisy, which thankfully isn't often). I can't concentrate on coding when listening to music, as I tend to lose myself in it.

This post got me thinking about how awesome it is these days to be able to pick some obscure track and have it played instantly...at no cost. So my pick from the past (one I haven't heard in the last 2 decades) was 'Highway Song' by Blackfoot from the album 'Strikes'...the second album I ever bought. The first was Judas Priest, 'Screaming for Vengeance'. So much music and so little time!
As a side note, youtube does a pretty good job with finding related stuff...The Outlaws/Green Grass and High Tides is now playing...I saw them with Styx last fall. Great show! Old guys can still rock!

I'm more into late night listening, and my goal is either cathartic (on a bad day) or uplifting, on most nights. Lately I've been really enjoying Lindsay Stirling, especially "Shadow."
