Doing that makes us all look bad for not getting rid of someone who can't do their job. So instead just let the customer assume you're the idiot.

Interesting, I have never had to meet my users in over 16 years of software development. I have always met with the PMs, BAs, etc., but not actual users.
I guess this would not be true if you are self-employed, etc, or not an actual software developer but IT support, perhaps, I don't know.

Basically self-employed working from home for the last 12 years. I suppose I may fall into the DevOps category, but my primary role is development.

Not only training but meetings in general! I've got one of those tomorrow, it was originally scheduled for January 9th.
Then another next Wednesday, which was originally supposed to be sometime mid-2016. Yeah, coming up on a year and a half of delays. Several of those delays were the end-user's fault thinking they didn't need it anymore, usually a few days before the planned meeting. Then after realizing their mistake, rescheduling for a month or two out.

Aye, i know that.
Some weeks i can't breathe because of meetings, then you do their wishes and ask for a test by them.
8 weeks pass and you recieve a mail, "didn't work, please fix and add this and that also, and i invited you for a meeting"....
You know how times passes. Repeat the 2 to 3 line btw

Reminds me of my all-time "favorite" user interaction involving UAT, paraphrased slightly.
Me: So here is the link to the new version for testing. I've checked it to make sure there aren't any errors, but you are the expert and might use the system a bit differently than I do. You will need to check and make sure everything works to your expectations, then send me your approval and we'll get deployment to production schedule.
User: Okay, let me know when that is complete so we can start using the new version.
Me: Ummm, I need you to test and then approve that everything works. Just do what you normally would but do it in this test environment. At least once or twice for each of the functions you perform using the product. Let me know if you find any problems or strange behavior.
User: Okay, just let me know when the testing is done.
Me:  Sure, I'll do that.

Yup - not to mention that the morality here is just about as stupid as it gets (I can say that because I'm from Denmark where we have a much more relaxed point of view on alcohol):
Booze is only sold in special shops (Systembolaget), and their business idea is: You really shouldn't buy anything from us. But if you do, we'll make sure that you pay as much as possible to the government for the priviledge.
And they have the audacity to send out tv commecials: We're not like other companies, our goal is not to make money on your weaknesses (yeah, right - see above).
So my question is: WHY THE ELEPHANT ADVERTISE AT ALL???? Spending a lot of money on tv-commercials can surely only be for one reason. If they were really concerned about peoples health, they could have spent the money on health care donations

Along the same lines of major tobacco companies agreeing to pay for advertising campaigns to educate consumers about the dangers of tobacco. Not only were they barred from advertising their own products or sponsoring events geared towards teenagers, they also had to contribute millions annually to support these anti-smoking ads in every state. Not voluntarily, but still...
