....but it's not listed as a programming language, which I suppose strictly speaking is true.
I regularly use C# and javascript. I play around with a few others but not enough to count as 'regular'.

Actually, I find it strange that SQL is listed as a programming language. To me it's more like a "hack the production database data" language...

That is related to how the language is used, which is not really fair on the language itself. After all, VB is listed as a language and has more than its fair share of hack systems built using it too.

You can't compare the two.
You can actually make functional programs using VB. All you can do with SQL is manipulate data.

I wasn't comparing them. I was just making the point that criticising a language based on its use doesn't really say anything about the language itself. You were critical of SQL because it can be used poorly, and I made the assertion that so can VB also be used poorly. In fact, pretty much any programming language can be used poorly. But that doesn't say anything about the language itself.

Nope, sorry, but you misunderstood (or I didn't explain): I was critisizing the fact that you can't do anything but manipulate data with it. I just used the word hack for fun. Any lanugage can be used poorly, so there's really no need to attack VB (again) on that account...

Many people consider frameworks as languages themselves. Given the nature of current software developement (e.g. to reach the light bulb instead of using a stair of the correct size it's better to put a chair on a table upon book upon 45 carpets of different size held up by 3 shorter stairs of different sizes) it's fairly common to have several frameworks in the same product. Add HTML and CSS - which are NOT programming languages - and a bit of boasting...

For webdev, I usually use four different languages on any given web page.
- SQL for data storage/retreival
- php to build pages
- javaScript so they can do something on the client side
- HTML/CSS to finally display the stuff.
The C++/C# is falling into disuse as the company wants it all moved to a web interface.

I dont want to waste another hour re reading if HTML is or is not a programming langauge, or that SQL has it in it's name "Query Language"
my 2 cents is this : as a full (over and stumble) stack wonnabe, i use the following:
start with HTML
then add a bunch of Javascript to do stuff
building HTML in Javascript code has a different mental logic then writing xml HTML code.
Then you start to wrap common styles in a CSS file. Which has another differnt mental model on how that will connect with the HTML structure to work.
that's the client.

Uhm, THERE DIFFERNT OK! "head scratching" - C# has been adding a few dynamic stings in lately most likely derived from languages like JS.
Java and C# have tones in common.
But the frameworks around them lead to different ways of building and organizing the code which can end up being clumsy roadblocks for a decent developer of either to be able to switch over and start working on the other from scratch.
and on the other end: Client browser front end Javascript vs Node.js on a server?
is that like WPF and MVC or a c# service application?

I primarily only use 2 languages (C# and C++), but that is mainly because I know them well, want to learn them deeply, and avoid web development like the plague. Also, I dislike Java as a language; the libraries and runtime are ok.
I have, and do, occasionaly play with other languages (like F#, Go, Rust, Ruby, Python, variants of Javascript, etc.) to see what they offer / are good at, and to get some new ideas, but haven't really considered doing any serious projects with them.
Do many other people do this as well? Or should I try to branch out a bit more and commit to a serious (hobby) project in a language that I don't know (even if it means a lot of hair pulling)?

Most of the project contains, C#, ASP.NET, JavaScript, JQuery, AngularJS, some times VB.
We have a project (web based application) contains some pages of VB and some of C# with the scripting language of VBScript, JavaScript, JQuery (Now we think of adding bootstrap, angularJS, Node.JS...still counting)

Wouldn't you consider JQuery, Angular and Node as frameworks or libraries? They are all still JavaScript one language.
the FAQ on the AngularJS website says:

it is correct 'Theoretically' but though they are made from same JavaScript language, still I need to code differently for them (JQuery code will not work unless I refer libraries, AngularCode will not work 'as is' for Node), anyways, it cost/involve development time.

The argument "won't work without X" cannot be used here as we are not talking about dependencies, but about programming languages (which are identified by their syntax and grammar in a coherent way).
So from your original statement I see three with the tendency to two (you state VB is not necessarily used regularly).

I think this is bad if future of programming is going in direction of just broadening array of languages and frameworks.
