Just think of the file definitions in COBOL. That is exactly the Union data structure you can create in C.

And the mischief caused by the ALTER statement in COBOL is exactly what you get when you use pointers in C.

Many people think that C is derived from algorithmic languages that preceded it. I maintain that it is COBOL dressed up in very few reserved words!
