Why do we (in the U.S.) have only 2-3 people to choose from for President, yet their are 50 contestants for Miss American?

Because for important decisions, it is easier to present a binary option, with both radiobuttons returning the same value. Once the people 'decide', they'll have to accept that 'choice' for a few years.
Other countries make it even more easy by providing only one option to choose.
