What is it about this place, lately, that's making so many people think that they have the right to decide whether or not other people are allowed to talk?
If you don't want to contribute to a thread, then a: say that you don't want to contribute to it, and then b: don't contribute to it.
You do not have the right to tell anyone that they are not allowed to talk. You do not own CP, and you are not the boss of anyone here.
Feel free to not contribute further to this thread, since that is part and parcel of your stated intention.
However, be aware that specialising in one operating system does not increase your employability; it diminishes it.
Someone who can write the code that you write plus port it to another operating system will be considered a more valuable hire.

I've got Classic Shell on my Win 7 machines, but I'm a bit wary of "extending" Win 8, because it already crashes more than Win '95 ever did (it just hides it better -- instant restart and no blue screen).

I long have advocated Microsoft products, not because they make me a shitload of money, but because they were genuinly the best in town. But if I can serve both the Windows and 'nix platform, I can only gain.

Yup, even if they hardly know how to handle the mouse, they'll exclaim M$ makes crap. Then comes a look as if "knowledge" has been spread throughout the room.
Usually I explain how good the crap actually is; take the old MS-DOS manual, over 500+ pages of knowledge, and compare that to the manual that came with Windows 3.0. Compare the intimidating UI to the GUI, beautifully imposing a recognizable standard for simple things like a button. There has been an alternative sponsered by IBM and there is a free alternative, yet people were, and are, buying Windows!
I'd recommend reading theoldnewthing for some of the small wonders that the OS contains.

Me probably neither, or at least not as soon as it becomes available. Because I'm pretty sure Microsoft won't allow me to revert to Windows 7 if I deem Windows 10 in line with Vista and 8.

I think it would revert OK, but you'd probably still get hit for monthly payments for Win 10, eighteen months down the line, when they suddenly reveal that they did mean to make it OS-as-a-service, after all.

Oddly enough, I was looking at this earlier today (I'm using Windows VM's for IE testing - supplied from modern.ie, but they have a 30 day limit on them).
I read that this solution just gives you another 30 days and you can only use it twice though?

Dunno, did it on my own machine a while back. It did not start complaining after those 30 days probably because I also disabled "automatic updates" in one go.

Perhaps that's what triggers it off. My VMs are showing "not genuine" on the desktop background, but they're still allowing me to do testing.

Don't bother activating Windows (and burning through your licenses) for your testing VMs. Google "rearm Windows" if you need to extend your "trial" period...
That is, extend your search a little...there's ways to keep extending it forever.

If you're in the middle of some project, you'd rather keep using the VM that's expiring rather than restarting with a brand new one.

It depends what you're using it for I guess. The ones from modern.ie are just for testing using older versions of IE, so most of the time it's only 10 minutes of inconvenience.

Ah, well there you go.
Generally speaking, I'm thinking in terms of setting up test environments that take hours to get "juuuuust right". Otherwise, yeah, nuke/copy over.
