There are loads of people out there who agree Apple’s prices are too high and don’t buy their products. That’s fair enough. In the meantime Apple has $180 billion in cash or whatever.

I really doubt that. In VS 2013 they cut part of the libraries coming with MFC with the instalation and I believe they are starting to give up on the idea that the Win Applications should be written in c++ with MFC. After all they have their little 'cute' c# for the job.
You can notice small things like for example refactor function for c# but it's not supported for c++ and such small signs that they give their favorite child c# more time than any other.
On the other hand who does actually want to do something with CLictCtrl, where you cannot add an icon on the second column if its not in the first. Come on its not the 90ties.
Note : I am talking about the MBCS portion of the MFC library.

That Come on was not for you, it was for the lack of updates of MFC from M$. I got the feeling that they just support MFC just for the older projects to run. All of their attention is focused on the c#. I don't particularly like c#. You have everything there you just need to know what to use. The idea of writing your own libraries is gone completely. Where is the creativity ?

I'd have to disagree. .NET is a great framework but it definitely lacks things, and I'm not one for doing everything the Microsoft Way. I have a large library of stuff that I leverage many pieces of in just about every project. In fact, because .NET handles so much of the drudgery, I can actually spend more time in a creative space, and C#, what with Linq, lambda expressions, functional programming style, really supports that creativity, I've found.

I think it would be more accurate to state that MS has decided Metro apps are the future, and the MFC, WinForms, and raw Win32 UI are all legacy interface tools. And after ignoring the C++ world for about a decade while building Winforms and WPF for .net, Metro is available for C++ apps.
Now if MS would only acknowledge that 95% of current Win7 boxes on the net will only be replaced with Win10 when the old machines are scrapped; and that making Win10 a free upgrade won't budge it more than a few percent. Unless the make a(nother) massive policy change and backport the W10 metro app in a window model to Win7/8 it will be a half dozenish years before most of us could seriously consider replacing our apps current UI with a Metro version.

As that's in the UK, I really hope to God they're building robotic trousers. Robotic pants would be horribly wrong, and likely to chafe.

With that being the case, the traditional waterfall development approach, which requires each step of a project to be completed before the IT team can move onto the next, seems a bit outdated. There's a case for waterfall?

You know, the more time that goes by, the more myths about waterfall, which, after all, was cited as a flawed software design process. Why the agile community insists on continuing to compare itself against a flawed model is like me continually exclaiming how my current wife is so much better than my ex-wife (not, mind you, that I'm married, that was a metaphor.) I mean, come on, how much longer do we have to hear about this? It seems to me that the agile community can't let go of the past relationship. Maybe they still yearn for it subconsciously.

IMO the case for agile comes out of the realisation that all applications/systems are an experiment. The key to successful experimentation is early realisation when it is going right or wrong and appropriately adjusting - which is something you get from the agile process.
However - if you don't realise that applications/systems are an experiment and hold fast to the doctrine of the one final goal then neither Agile nor Waterfall will help. A fixed length, fixed cost project is going to go awry whether you make the journey as one long leap or as a series of smaller hops.

I sincerely hope the software they build into cars is not experimental.
There are a lot of different types of system, with different requirements. A Web app may evolve continually, the software in a robotic or control system typically less so.

The software they build for prototype cars is experimental, but the software they install in production cars is the result of successful experimentation.
("Experiment" is perhaps the wrong word. Attempt/Try/Essay maybe? Basically what I mean is that you do not have the luxury of 100% knowledge of what the end result will be but rather criteria by which to judge the successfulness and a process for iteratively improving as measured by those criteria)
