I only have to wait a year for what should be a free update. Wow that sounds like a real bargain.

The title is misleading - the bargain is WITHIN the first year...So update early and you will get it free, wait for SP1 and you will pay...
Skipper: We'll fix it.
Alex: Fix it? How you gonna fix this?
Skipper: Grit, spit and a whole lotta duct tape.

Obviously I just read the title and didn't go to the web page. That actually is better.

Do they have a release date yet, I'm holding off getting a new desktop until 10 is on the box!

I find it awesome. Who has the balls nowadays to say "OK, we made crap, let's listen to our users and get it back" ?
The next question is : why should it _always_ have breakthroughs and highly innovative features ? Why this quest to novelty ? Win7 works and is awesome, Win8 works and, let's put the debate about start menu and tiles appart for a minute, one of the most stable and quick OS I have ever had on my computer. What do I need more ?

Well, that concept with the application running in windows has some advantages, so I would not want to go back to dos.
I truly miss autoexec.bat and config.sys, though. Having startup menus with the different memory management was a hassle, but you could really manage every detail of it and that was great. Now this all happens while "Welcome" is displayed on my screen and I have no way to influence it whatsoever.

Because otherwise isn't it just the same as Windows 7? Then what's the point in releasing a "new" version? Even more importantly for Microsoft, why should users upgrade?
Unless Windows is the perfect operating system there's always room for improvement, but they need to concentrate on giving us things we need, not deviating off on some marketing department led nonsense.
Apple manage to add new (and generally useful) functionality in each major release and OSX is a highly polished product - I personally think Microsoft need to buckle down and get on with doing the same with Windows, before it's too late.

Bugfixes ? Minor changes ? Hardware compatibility ?
Brent Jenkins wrote: OSX is a highly polished product
Running on a bunch of dedicated hardware ! I mean, look at what Windows has been achieving in the last decades : This system is able to run on billions of different setups, can be tweaked to the last bit, etc, etc... Apple is doing a very good job, no question about that, but the requirements cannot be compared !

I thought that was what Windows Update and patch Tuesday was for?
Rage wrote: Running on a bunch of dedicated hardware !
You say that like it's a bad thing
I've come around to thinking that Microsoft trying to be all things to everyone, trying to cover every possible market (poorly in many cases) is what's actually causing it problems.
Apple's principle of keeping tight control of the hardware is starting to look like a wise move. Microsoft isn't free to make major changes to it's products, it's at the mercy of whatever cheap and nasty PC manufacturers put out (much like Android).

Can you name a couple of things then that would make it worthwhile?

Getting rid of the registry
Naming things logically and consistently
Getting rid of legacy virus-magnet code
Simplifying the UI
Making the UI look professional and slick

Making changes that are actually a new release.
This release, although costing a lot of money, just fixes things that should have been fixed in an update to a previous release, for no cost, because you paid for that release and deserve for it to be fixed if it was deficient in any way.

They already went down that route. Windows 8.1 was a free update to 8.0.
We also don't know yet what Windows 10 will cost in terms of upgrade, so I don't know what you're basing that claim on. Also, don't forget that for devices 7" and smaller, Windows 8.x is already free for OEMs.

So that precludes an update 8.2 if update 8.1 didn't fix things thought as still not being fixed in 8.1, at no additional cost?

It shouldn't cost anything if it is not bringing anything new to the release.
dandy72 wrote: Also, don't forget that for devices 7" and smaller, Windows 8.x is already free for OEMs.
What does that have to do with charging for a release that has no added value?

Ok, lets cut to the chase: Windows 10 adds no value, therefore you have no reason to get it. Thus you don't have to spend any money for it.
That keeps things simple.

If you wanted a Start menu you would've stayed on 7.
(And now that we know that 10 will be free to 8.x (and even 7) users, does this change your stance on 10 at all? I do agree it's what 8 should've been to begin with, but then if that's how it worked, I'd prefer to be on 11 already)

Hi Too All,
Regulars will know it's my first day as a contractor so user name will change as well as profile pic (new one taken this morning in a suit) Was going to change everything at work but the network policy is not to allow any social media, downloading, memory sticks, CD's, Dvd's, fun of any kind . I had to get special dispensation to change a mouse (it was sticky! ). Forgot my log in to the PC, got lost with office 2012, standard Monday. On the plus side it looks like I can solve various problems they were having. Sorry for not replying to posts but phone had to be silent and I wasn't allowed to log in. So far so good so what!
