Those who know me may be surprised to hear that I quite enjoy going on to some Facebook pages to engage in exchanges of views with people whom I don't agree with. However, it's killing my limited monthly bandwidth . Just leaving Facebook open, consumes 100 MB an hour. I assume that means there's a ton of AJAX calls running chat, and the 'what's going on' thing on the right. I have installed an ad blocker, but, does anyone know of any Chrome add ins or other ways to make Facebook not update itself dynamically and just show me the page I loaded ? I realise I'll probably lose tagging as a result.

And therein lies the error of your ways, my good man!
I use FB (everyday) to connect with friends and share the odd mildly interesting technical link, but close the browser tab when I'm done. I'm on FB about 5-10 minutes a day max and don't think it makes a dent in my monthly bandwidth allowance.

Well, that's fine, but, if you're using it to enter in to detailed discussion, you will find yourself having it open for long periods just because you're typing, or going back to it to reply ( especially as FB won't send you notification emails if you get a reply from a stranger ). In many ways, the forums there are a bit like web forums in 2002.

CG if you want to indulge your argumentative nature you need to pay the price, find somewhere else to argue with them there is no shortage of targets.
I thought Tasmania was getting onto the NBN or does that still hold a ridiculously low volume limits!

Well you will live in the bucolic state! Think on all the other benefits that go with that as you watch your allocation gurgle down the wire.
You know the other alternative, you travel regularly, so your could always live in a metropolis, great bandwidth, sh*tty environment.

 I wish I could do that but I would probably need to get a divorce first, the wife has become addicted to city living and Singapore is the antithesis of bucolic.

I used to argue with people who believe memory should be handled by garbage collectors. Never on FB, though...

Sadly, the internet is compressing. If you want to talk to people in the mainstream, you have to do it inside FB, which I think is a truly awful thing for the internet as a whole.

Keep Fiddler running while you have Facebook open to see all HTTP traffic (including AJAX calls). That should give you an idea of what you can block.

I'm trying out FBPurity which is a browser add-on that gets rid of much of the noise on the FB page.
Maybe it might reduce the traffic a little?
So far it seems to have stopped FB blowing up FF every day.

Just a thought, can you try using the mobile version of the site (not sure if that would help or not)?

Yeah, I'd considered that, I might try that tonight and see. Actually it looks like gmail uses more than facebook does.

Both have mobile versions, worth a shot. I know as I use the mobile version on my phone (I loathe needing an app to do everything on a phone), and neither chew up that much bandwidth. I'd be interested in hearing how that turns out.
