Not so. It is for people who do not know JavaScript.
JavaScript is a very robust language, but most people only know how to copy and paste from the internet instead of really learning the language.

I used to think that, and for most things I agree that too much abstraction is bad. But then I started using jQuery. It's well done. It's like an 80k file download extra, even less possibly if you use cached file from a CDN, and it doesn't add too much overhead.

jQuery is the ultimate Swiss army sledgehammer of frameworks, it does everything but it has so many attachments that you can't find the one that you want to use for the tiny corner of its functionality you need.
