When the "quote seleted text" button is pressed the result is to attmpt to submit the reply, and an "empty post" error is generated if the quoted text would have been the first content of the reply. When the issue happens for you, are you seeing any javascript error in FF? (Ctrl+Shift+J shows the javascript console). The decorative quote was purely a CSS change that affects message layout.
