I decided against diving in too deeply into colours and instead am using a star to highlight popular posts. This unfortunately means that upvotes (but not officially marked as "popular") messages can be green and unstarred. It is just hard to differentiate them. When the "quote seleted text" button is pressed the result is to attmpt to submit the reply, and an "empty post" error is generated if the quoted text would have been the first content of the reply.
