I had the same problem. Because I never had experience in parallel programming and I completely agree with you about the CUDA programming documents. Few months back i bought these books: "CUDA with Examples" and "Programming Massively Parallel Processors", both books by NVIDIA family! I'm fairly happy with the first book but the second one will take you very much further. You still need to refer the Programming manual side-by-side.
