I've had a look at the specification and, to be honest, it's not that easy for a native English speaker. The best I can suggest is that a function would appear to be similar to a process in programming. So a function provides the connection between a host and a USB device and manages the flow of information between the two. I don't know if that helped but it may be worth trying to get a copy translated (professionally) into your own language.

In this specification, the "function" is a USB device that is able to transmit or receive
data or control information over the bus. A function is typically implemented as a
separate peripheral device with a cable that plugs into a port on a hub. However, a
physical package may implement multiple functions and an embedded hub with a single
USB cable. This is known as a compound device. A compound device appears to the host
as a hub with one or more non-removable USB devices.
Each function contains configuration information that describes its capabilities
and resource requirements. Before a function can be used, it must be configured by
the host. This configuration includes allocating USB bandwidth and selecting
function-specific configuration options.

Hi all,
Does anyone know how programs like HWMonitor get readings from the temperature sensors inside PCs? I've looked into WMI, but the Microsoft documentation suggests it doesn't work.
I know that the sensors are accessed via the SMBus on the motherboard, but that isn't accessible (as far as I know) from a user-mode program. For what I actually want to achieve, writing a kernel-mode device driver is probably a bit excessive, and almost certainly too time-consuming (particularly seeing as I've never done anything like that before).
I've been googling around for about five hours now without any success. I know it's possible (after all, HWMonitor doesn't even need installing and works quite nicely), but I'm completely out of ideas.

Have you looked into WMI[^]? MSAcpi_ThermalZoneTemperature seems to do something like this, but I haven't tried it myself...

I have just acquired a handed down mini-tower PC claiming to be a Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleo J (on the case). The only text I could find on the motherboard is p4m800-pro-M.
I have reached a point installing Windows Server 2003 (SBS, via MSDN) where a NIC is required, yet Windows does not recognise the installed NIC. The cable seems fine, green lights are on on both sides, i.e. my DSL router and the PC.
I can't find any working links for drivers for the Scaleo J, yet lots for various guises of p4m800-pro. The first I tried has had no effect on the OS recognising and dealing with the NIC. Any advice will be most welcome, especially low level dirties to help me interrogate the BIOS/NIC. NIC is enabled in BIOS.

Here's something I just don't get. I have a USB device that enumerates as a virtual COM port (CDC device), so I can use the .NET SerialPort class to communicate with it. For the most part, this works fine. However, sometimes the device just gets disconnected or resets and I need to re-open the COM port (this isn't my actual problem right now, I just need to be able to handle it). I should be able to do this:

I get a "Port COM 3 does not exist", but if I look in Device Manager, COM 3 clearly exists. I cannot re-open the port until I power off my device AND close my program, then bring them both back up. This happens on XP, Vista, and Win7.
NOTE: This is not just a problem with my program - this also happens with HyperTerminal!
My colleagues and I suspect it's a problem with the driver, so I've been looking to see if I can find an alternative one.
What is the best way to handle this? I have to run some unattended tests that can last 12 or more hours, so if the device resets I can't really automatically close and re-open my program (well, I suppose I could, but I suspect that's more work than I have time to do, and I'd rather not have to keep track of the entire program state and restore it).

Hi,
I recently read a Microsoft web page claiming closing-opening a serial port is likely to fail for unknown reasons, the serial port needs an undetermined delay between close and open, even when nothing went wrong. Unfortunately I didn't save the link.
So the only advice I have is: keep the port open and try and make sure nothing ever goes wrong!
OTOH I'm not surprised Device Manager, the SerialPort class and/or the serial driver(s) do not always agree on the availability or health status of a port.

If only it was that simple! Unfortunately, the device can reset for reasons beyond my control (temperature, voltage drop/spike), and even if I keep my port open, I still get an IOException when I try to talk to it once the device is available (I think the error is "port not open"), and I have to reset the connection as I described above. But thanks for the info, I'll see if I can find that link.

Register for plug and play events in the app. When you get a removal notice then close the handle. If you dont then the device willenumerate badly on reset rssulting in either an additional com port or none at all.

Is Anyone Know how to run PL/M-86 code without old physical system.
My meaning is there is any emulator or simulator by which I can run PL/M-86 code on windows platform.
Previously I had downloaded one but it requires only assembly code to run and PL/M-86 is high level language.

Same as all systems. What you need is a converter that will convert your PL/M to C/C++ or VB which you can then compile into a usable Windows application. Alternatively you need a PL/M compiler that generates x86 code for Windows. Try searching Google for any possibilities.

Is this x86 code is assembly code?
I have a PL/M-86 complier [DOS 5.0 (038-N) PL/M-86 V3.1]. ***This generates assembly code***.
But to run this assembly code i required some tool which i don't have till now. If you have any exprience in PL/M code run or debug then please share with me.
Someone told me that to run plm code sequece is

Sorry, but I have not used this myself. If your assembly code is output in source form then you could possibly pass it through the MASM assembler to create an executable file.
Other than that I can only suggest you try Google for further suggestions.

Hi,
I have used PL/M once, some 30 years ago, and haven't seen any of it ever since. I consider it dead and buried. My suggestion is you move away from it, towards a recent language. Getting PL/M alive again is probably a bigger and less rewarding effort than rewriting some existing code once.
If the target environment is a modern PC, I suggest one of the .NET languages, such as C#.
If the target is some embedded system, I would stick to C or maybe C++.

I have to use PL/M (boundation).
How u run ur PL/M code 30 year before.
After that any new IDE or at least any emulator is desinged for developers or not U Know any thing about it.

Hi, one of my colleague just purchase Canon FS100[^]. He recored many move in it and he could play all of that file which run continous between each other without pause period. He could run like this in the camcorder and in TV.
But in PCs, he could not do that. He could only play one file and after finish he need to double click the other file. He do not want to do that, he want to play all of it like he play in the tv or camcorder.
The CD came with this camcorder is Canon Digital Video solution disk and ImageMixer 3 SE for SD. I also try in both of the software in this CD but i could not find the play all option.
Does anyone know is it possible for me to play all of the movie in the camcorder? If it is possible, how could i do that...?

What type of files are they? If they are viewed through Windows Media Player then they can all be added to the playlist and then enable the repeat. It would then loop the videos.
Reading the information about the specific camera, the video format is a MOD is that correct? If this is the case then Windows Media Player Classic might need to be used and if I am not mistaken you can still create a playlist with that. Might want to try VLC

It's slower than any other current intel processors because it was designed for low power and low cost. A mobile atom has a 5W TDP, vs 35 for a normal laptop chip (25 or 10W for the more expensive low power models). The desktop chip runs at 10W vs 35 for a celeron or 65+ for a normal desktop CPU.
It's fast enough to surf the web; but don't plan on gaming or doing video encoding type work on it.
