Hi.
I'm writing a program that reads data from binary file and shows it on the screen. There could be a situation that there are multiple data files if the user enables file size limit. If the file size reaches the user-defined limit a new file is created and the data is saved there and so on. So there could be 0.bin, 1.bin, 2.bin, ... and so on.
Naturally I have to read and show the data in this "multiple data file" case, too.
At the moment I have a solution where I create an array of FileStream objects for each file and when I get an end of file I start to read the next stream in the array. This fast and ugly solution but is there any ready-made components/libraries for this kind of data handling or does anyone have a better solution?
The main idea is to show the data as one to the user through a certain file handling class that provides necessary methods like ReadBytes, Seek, etc.
Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
well I don't know if there is any kind of ready-made component/library for this case. But I think your solution is not that ugly. But I would suggest to write your own stream-object.
For this you could inherit FileStream or StreamReader etc. Then override the methods ReadByte etc. so that when you hit the last bytes of the file, you can open the next one and go on to read further. The advantage of this approach is that your own stream is reusable and it seems that you are reading from just "one" file instead of many.

Thanks Sebastian. Inheriting FileStream is a very good idea. I just finished an ugly for loop for that purpose but I will put you tip in use.

You could look into SQL queries, parameterised queries, and the System.Data.OleDb namespace. The general sequence of events is something like this:
- Create OleDbConnection
- Put together an SQL query string (hopefully using parameters)
- Create a new DataAdapter, giving it the OleDbConnection and the query string
- Fill a DataTable from the DataAdapter
Then, you make your changes to the table, and Update the DataAdapter.

Your Question is too Basic, i think if you can Google , you will definitely find an Answer. But that will be the last thing you should do. The First thing you need to do is to buy a Book , because is covered in any .NET book that has to do with Databases. You cant learn to program on Forums or on the internet. Buy a Book and read it and if you have questions about what you have read , then we can help.

On Remote Machine,can i pass user name and password in Network Path
when I pass @"\\1.168.1.1\d$\MyDir"
it gives network path was not found..

What happens if you type that into your computer ? Are you using the same username/password you logged in as ? You need admin access to use D$ in a path.

actually i dont have rights on that directory so I shared that directory on remote pc.
now I am thinking to write admin username and pwd in my code so that it can be accessed by any pc.
Please tell me how to pass username and pwd with my network path.
