MicrosoftReportViewer control --> I just want to make sure that it is not a clientside plugin, that it is just a server side control that all report data is rendered on server side (i.e. no client/browser to server/SQL communication)

It is a server side control like any other asp.net server controls such as GridView.
Therefore you don't need to install anything on the client PC.

And it would not try to communicate to Reporting Services/SQL server directly from client side right?

Only IIS will try to communitcate with SSRS when the page, in which ReportViewer used, is accessed by the client browser.
Browser will not directly communicate with SSRS.

I think we can use ActiveX for that. But it will work only on IE.

Why would you want to do that ?
I am astounded you can get the .NET version, but for this, I agree with the other poster, you'll need an active X control and it will only work in IE. Or you may be able to use silverlight ( that's worth investigating, I don't know ). I am intrigued by what you're trying to do here tho ?

My boss wants to put up a web site that our users can go to so they can see if their machine is "ready" for our software. I think it's kinda - well - stupid - but he hands out the paychecks every two weeks, so here I am...

OK, well, I do think your best bet is an active X control. I do recall that some of the anti spy ware sites would show you a list of some specs, to try to scare you in to buying off them, but I'm not sure if showing them locally means you could get them back to the server, or what they showed. I would expect that to be browser dependant, as an ActiveX also will be ( IE only ).

Well, I'm not going to recommend using an ActiveX. I would bet that most users aren't admins on their boxes at work, so I guess we're going to have to just assume that if they have an appropriate OS and .Net version, they can run the app.

how about you develop a thin clien on each of client machine and using .NET remoting to call that client(from web server). then render that data as ur desired format.

The whole point is not installing anything on their machine (it's for enterprise users). I'll just tell the boss it can't be done.

I want to share different files with different users, I want to give permission to specific user to share
a specific file and no two users can share the same file.
Controling:
1. Spasific computer
2. read only
etc..

The only way to do this, is to have users upload the files, and then your central app controls who gets what. So, you're talking about building a permissions system, which means users need to log in, and then have permission to files assigned to them.

Is it possible to detect the version of .Net that's installed on a client machine over the web? Specifically, I want to see if .Net 3.5 SP1 is installed.

Hi Am trying to make a Socket web application for testing purposes.
I have sorted out how to use the socket appropriately and it seems like working fine.
One thing I did not figure out how to do is:
I use, for example, the following when creating a socket:

I just recieved a new PC at work with Visual Studio 2008 and Crystal Reports 2008 installed on it. I can't seem to add a reference in VS for the Crystal Reports and since they didn't install my old version of Crystal on it, none of my applications can buid without errors. How can I reference Crystal 2008 so that I can update my reprots and compile again? Help!

Dear colleges,
I have run into the following situation:
webpage1.aspx is using UC1.ascx.
UC1.ascx has a button which as a result will redirect to webPage2.aspx
webPage2.aspx uses UC2.ascx. Within UC2.ascx I have a button (Send).
It seems like pressing the button leads to re-launching webPage2 (it's Page_Load method is being called with IsPostBack set to false).
The problem is that re-launching the page will result in a brand new UC2 instance, which will wipe out all information previously stored in it prior to selecting the Send button.

Not sure what the cause of the problem is but I've always tried to avoid doing navigation in user controls. What you could do it have your page subscribe to an event in the user control and when the button is pressed on the user control raise the event and the event handler in the page can do the redirection.
