I wasn't sure if this should go in Web Dev or ASP.
I'm using a DataList that contains JavaScript in order to fill some textboxes. The DataList pops up in a modal div dialog, and the user clicks an item, filling in two fields on the page. This works fine. The problem occurs when I try to get the values in the code-behind. The values are empty, even though they do in fact contain text on the page. If the user types in their own values, it works like it should. Here's the code.
JavaScript:
function fillLookupField(control, value) {
document.getElementById(getClientId(control)).value = value;
}
getClientId() just returns the ClientId so that the control can be accessed from the JavaScript. Here is part of it:

This is the code-behind for the submit button click:
Dim amount As Integer = Val(txtBonusCost.Text)
Dim desc As String = txtBonusDesc.Text
MsgBox(amount & vbTab & desc)
The message box just displays a zero, so the value of an empty String concatenated with another empty String. I've tried making a hidden field and setting its input the same way, and I have the same issue. Any ideas?

Have you looked at the Page Source from the Browser to see what your server generated javascript getClientId has in it?

Yes, and it's good. Again, the textboxes DO have the text in them as they should when the JavaScript executes.

Ok, next wild guess is that you have some code initializing the values to empty in an operation that executes prior to the button event handler in the page life cycle sequence.

No, I don't. I just tried something else that may be helpful or at least interesting. I typed in the values and submitted the form and it worked as it did before. I then used the JavaScript to set its value, but it retained the old value, even though there was a new value in the textbox from the JS. (The old value persisted from the ViewState and was present in the textbox when the page loaded.) Once the page loads, the old values are the ones restored from the ViewState into the textboxes.
If that paragraph doesn't make sense:
1. Values (call them "old values") typed in.
2. Submitted ok, old values detected in code-behind as they should be.
3. Page loads with old values in textboxes.
4. JavaScript inserts new values into textboxes, and they are visually present.
5. Code-behind picks up old values, not the new ones.
6. Page loads with old values in textboxes.

Evan, we could go on like this forever and never get near a solution. Texting is not conducive to debugging. While it is entirely possible you are thoroughly debugging the application, you are not giving that impression in your posts. If in fact you have not performed such work, I strongly suggest you do. Debugging is how you find out exactly what is happening rather than just guessing.

I've debugged this as well as I can think to. JavaScript can't be "debugged" per se, as far as I know. And at any rate, I'm confident the JS itself is not the problem. I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a difference between an HTML input's value property and the ASP TextBox's Text property. Or maybe something with the page lifecycle.
If you have any advice on what I should specifically look at to debug these issues, I'd be glad to hear it.

please let me explain what my problem is and if you can answer that'd be very useful!
1. I am establishing a membership site and want all members to have an email address associated with the domain when they signup, with pop3/imap and a web access to this mail
2. When they signup to the membership site they will type their name and a desired mailbox or alias, for example if our site was called "website.com" and when John signs up he will want "john@website.com"
so he types this into the page on signup and gets his mailbox account created automatically through an API functioning system,
so there is no manual creations.
I am presently talking to hosting companies but not having much luck, if you know of a solution or method, please share!

i am trying to create a form using ajax, using a cfc file. but want the first dropdown to load when page loads ("the company name" and this works... then once the first populates and you select a company name the second dropdown is populated with the users that work with that company ("members" in member table linked to "company" in the contacts table... and this works) as well once both of those is selected it populates the rest of the form... address, city, state, zip, member number(on members table),category name(only as input not as a dropdown where another can be selected to update) and that is what i want... the category name is on the category table which lists all categories is linked to the catid table that holds the member id, category name and catid...
like i said i can get the rest to populate all being text fields but the categoy i want to be a dropdown of all categoies but have the one they have selected previously to be selected...
please help i have been working on this for a while

Hi,
im using Wshell.Regwrite to write registry(vb script) through html page...
but it works fine only when the option "Initialize and script ActiveX
controls not marked as safe" under Tools\internet
options/Security/Customlevel/ActiveX controls and plugIns ,is set to prompt or enable .....and if we set to any other option ie(disable) it fails ie it shows error like .. "ActiveX component cannot create object "Wscript.shell"...
So May i know whether is it possible to create my own ActiveX control(signed) with certificate so that it doesn"t depend on internet options..
if yes pls let me know how to do the same...

This app. gets its data from an ACCESS MDB using Remote Scripting (I know its legacy!) and is running within shared-web space.
Is it possible using this/or any other technology to retreive data held in this Access MDB from another web server e.g. server2.com. and if so, how?

So I open the Application event log to check cause..
it shows me..
aspnet_wp.exe could not be started.
The error code for the failure is 80004005.

that the ACLs on the installation directory
allow access to the configured account.
I tried to it again by applying rights to ASPNET user.
But I m faild.
and I m using Visual Studio 2005 that means....Net Framework 2.0

Did you try to reinstall ASP.NET? Use aspnet_regiis.exe -i within the v2.0-framework directory (can be found in Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework.
