I see.
There are ways to make that easier.
e.g. Google's gmail asks for first name, last name and desired mail address;
clicking the "check availability" button either confirms, or suggests available alternatives such as the variations your example includes. No need to try them one by one.

In real life we have a first name and last name, as well as a social security number. Should we do without our names and use the number everywhere?
Websites have a URL and an IP address, should we work without URLs?
When programming, our variables have names, I hope you use meaningful names, and not var5939128, var5939129, var5939130?
If I were called John Smith just like a thousand other members, I would prefer to call myself
John Smith 492 over Member 5939129.

I approve of the new URL thingy - nice work.
In the same way I can point to "me" by

instead of

it would be very nice to have the equivalent for Articles.
eg http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/Iain-Clarke
instead of
http://www.codeproject.com/script/Articles/MemberArticles.aspx?amid=27067.
To my handwavy theorising, this should be a fairly easy change to make. As my sig says, I'm busy job hunting (hint, world, hint!), and I'd really like to put a simple URL to my codeproject articles on my CV. It's my main portfolio of code I can readily show other people. I can't really show the work I've been doing for my current job, as that wouldn't be right.

But I will say "It will be done".

I was googling for loading JPEG files. Google gave me this link http://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/View.aspx?fid=1647&msg=2560662[^]
Now when I try to browse through this particular thread, instead of opening the message in the thread, I am being redirected to the 1st page of the C/C++/MFC forum.
Has anyone else reported the same behavior? cause I tried to search for similar query, but did not find any. I am using Firefox 3.0.6 on WinXP SP3.

Two issues:
1. Because of the way we show/hide messages using javascript, can sometimes link to messages that aren't initially visible on a page.
2. Messages can be deleted which will mean you'll go to the first page.

Edit/Change your alias. As long as it has not been used, you will get a shiny new friendly url.

Hi Chris,
you are substituteing a dash for every space, wouldn't a period be more appropriate?
That way we get firstname.lastname as is used often in e-mail addresses.

Hi,
When I set a Date Filter for one of the forum, it is being set for all other forums.
It will be good if we can set different date filters for each of the forums as some forums have messages posted once in a week and some forums get flooded with the questions daily.

We could do it, but I worry that the amount of time spent to do it, and the load it would put on the servers, and the number of people actually using this feature wouldn't balance.

Hi All/Chis,
When attempting to change the site password with 'Name or Alias' = 'Article email' = 'Logon email' (i.e., all are the same), the password is rejected with the message:
The email you supplied has already been registered. Please choose another, or try retrieving your password if that is your member email With a small change (modifying Article email), the change is puported to be successful. However, attempting to logon after the change requires the use of the old password rather than the new password. So it appears the password change does not work as advertised.
Perhaps I am pressing [ENTER] with the wrong finger?

Hi Chris,
A little more information on the issue. I believe the problems I encountered were due to a stale cookie after I performed a logout. I was able to get a password change to take after clearing the cache.
I also changed the password on an ancient account that I created a few years ago when I could not log in using my standard account. Perhaps deleting cookies on logout would mitigate the problem?
Deleting a cookie on logout also helps ensure that private data, when no longer needed, is not lying around. If there is data available, it risks being stolen. If there is no data, there is no risk.
