I am not stupid!!! The device is not an ordinary modem. It is a cellular phone with a fixed IP address. I know that the IP address is passed to the host when a PPP connection is initiated. I would like to extract that address without completing the connection. Do you have source code that will enable me to extract that IP address?

If you are wanting to do this in Windows, check out the CONFIGMG_* api. This is the api that windows uses to run Device Manager and such. MSDN has plenty of info... check it out.

Every time I create a new file by choosing New from the context menu that appears
when right-clicking on an empty spot on the desktop, the word "new" is added to
the beginning of the file name. Is there any way to change this behavior?
Ex. When you select New>Text Document you create a text file named "New Text
Document.txt". I don't want the word "New" to appear in the file name, I just
want the file name to be "Text Document.txt".

Can anyone clue me in on how program updating works? I'm not looking for code specifics, just a general idea of how the whole thing works. In case you need a little more info on what I'm looking for: I want my program to connect to the Internet, download the update files if needed, temporarily shut itself down, perform the updating, and then start back up again.

Hi,
I need a code to find if a file in Windows NT is read only or not.
The file attribute is not marked read only,
but it was made read only using the file security settings
(i.e NTExplorer->File->RightMouseClick->Properties->Security->Add->Everyone->Read).
I would appreciate if some one help me find a code which will look through the file ACL(Access Control List)
and determine if a file is read only or not.

The file isn't read only, it's just that the user don't have the privs to read it. Please don't mix the two concepts of security and DOS flags from the early '80s.
You are right you have to check the ACL(s), and this is not something I'd recommend if you only want to know if a user (you?) can read it or not. Just try to open it read-only and find out. GetLastError should give you an appropriate resonse.
(without testing I'd say the only possible response would be ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED if you don't have the privs, but knowing MS...)

I need to write an app to programmatically unbind a certain protocol from a network card. E.g. Check if Netbeui is bound to a certain ethernet network card and if so then I need to unbind it (without user intervention). The idea is that after running the app only TCP/IP would be bound to the ethernet card no matter what additional protocols are installed on the computer.
I've got it working in Win2k (with the use of the INetCfg API calls) but I can't find any API calls or code examples on how to this in Win98/Win Me and NT4.
Any ideas?

No. AFAIK this is impossible using published API. MS never been much of a team player in this area...
You could however have some luck looking at the .inf files and perhaps convince the script interpreter to remove it. If not, the only solution I know of is the old true-and-proven-that-takes-forever: disassembling MS' code.
Not much of an answer, but at least better than silence... Sorry for the "no way" reply.

I have an MFC based dialog application that contains a DHTML ActiveX control. I want to be able to pass an XML string to the control and have the XML displayed in the control.
Does anyone know if there is a way to do this? I have tried passing an XML string to the control using the CDHTMLEdit::SetDocumentHTML() method but it does not work. It will only correctly display HTML strings.
Due to my lack of success with the DHTML control I decided to replace the control with the Microsoft Web Browser ActiveX control to see if I could load XML strings into this control. I eventually got this to work ok but only after saving the XML to a file on the harddrive and then calling CWebBrowser2::Navigate(), passing the Navigate method the name of the file just saved.
Even though this works I would prefer to be able to pass the XML as a string straight into the control without having to save the xml to disk first. On the MSDN website there is some example code which shows how to load HTML content directly from a stream into the WebBrowser control. This does not work though with XML. Does anyone know why?

Here's probably the easiest way assuming you are using IE5.
Load the XML string into an MSXML IXMLDOMDocument object using the load or loadXML depending on your use. Then load the default style sheet for XML from the msxml.dll into another IXMLDOMDocument object using the load method and specifiying the url of : "res://msxml.dll/DEFAULTSS.XSL" Then do a transformNode on your XML document using the stylesheet. Then put the resulting transformation into your SetDocumentHTML method.
If you don't think IE5 will be installed, then you can put the defaultss.XSL into your application as a resource and load it from your own component using the res prototcol.
look for "Using the Default XSL Style Sheet in Your Application" in msdn which will have a link to get the default stylesheet that IE5 uses.
