MustOverride function - Can it ever have a different return type?

I am playing around with the dotnet membership providers and have hit a bit of a problem.

I have created a custom "MyMembershipUser" class that inherits the system.Web.Security.MembershipUser class. This seems to compile ok.

I then made a "MyMembershipProvider" class that inherits System.Web.Security.MembershipProvider

There are a number of MustOverride functions in the base MembershipProvider class that are MustOverride and have as a return value the base MembershipUser class.

When I create the Overrides Functions in MyMembershipProvider, the functions will only let me return the base MembershipUser class.

Is there any way to let the Overriding functions in MyMembershipProvider to return a MyMembershipUser class instead of the base MembershipUser class?

You can't change it, no. You CAN return a derived class and cast it in the code that recieves it.

Well, you'd use a hashtable, I guess, or build it into a resource file.

Select * from mytable where theword LIKE '%word%'

I think you need to buy a really basic book and work through it. A C# book first, then a SQL one.

I've been searching google thoroughly and haven't yet found anything that does what I need it to do, so I thought I'd ask here. Most of what is out there is software to create (display) a barcode. I want to actually scan the code and convert it to something I can use against my product database.

I have a web application. I want to be able to have the user scan a barcode and then have the scanned code picked up and used by the website. I understand this will require an activeX control. A windows application is not an option. It also needs to support a variety of scanning devices as we don't know what our clients will use to scan the barcodes.

I am not opposed to purchasing a third party solution.

If you have ever done something like this please point me in the direction of example code or third party vendors.

I haven't worked with any devices like that for many years but back then the devices actually convert the bar code to a byte sequence which is what they output. You would use the specification for the device to determine the format of the data. Then you have to read from the device using whatever connection it has to the PC. (COM port, USB, etc.)

After further searching I found that Microsoft has their own managed library that handles the device drivers. I think I will see if I can make it work in an activex control.

Hello All,

I am about to start a new web project and would like some advice on the best way to achive my goal.

I want to have a gridview control that displays database information. Lets say all customers from a customer table. Now say the database table (customer) is updated by another user, lets say an new customer is added. I want that new customer to be displayed to all other users with the page open. Without them having to refresh the page.

Can I do this using AJAX?

Can I fire an event when the data access layer method updates the database (say AddCustomer()), and then have each page listing for the update?

Is this possible?

Any help or a point in the right direction will be greatly appriciated.

No. AJAX means your page sends messages to the server, you can do this by polling the server with AJAX, but you'll use a lot of network traffic, you can't fire a message from the server to the client.

Can I not hold the customer data object in the cache? Then have AJAX point to it, so when it is updated it filters over to all the pages?

If I where to add a clock using AJAX it would have to do regular checks with the server!

What cache ? Do you know what AJAX is ?

AJAX doesn't point to anything, except the server it makes calls to.

I am binding a Generic List List<products> to an ASP DataGrid and have no problem with the string properties of the Product property items:

<asp:boundfield datafield="ShortName" headertext="Short Name" sortexpression="Program">

The problem I am having is how to bind the Integer properties (fields) to the DataGrid:

<asp: boundfield="" datafield="???????????" headertext="My Integer" ...<br="" mode="hold">
How do I do this?
