I am using the following script to echo all members except 'Administrator'
in 'Administrators' group :

In a list of Administrators (In XP, accessible through Right click 'My
Computer' -> Manage -> Local Users and Groups -> Groups ->
Administrators (double click)), I've few entries like :
Administrator
user1
user2
xyzdom\user3
user3
user4
The above script echoes user3 twice.
I don't want the script to echo 'user3' for the entry xyzdom\user3.
How could the condition be specified/modified in the script ?

Hi all,
I am trying to write a bit of code in VB.NET (2008) that will look inside a class and find all the public members, e.g.
Public Class User
public Name as string
public Dob as date
public Department as integer
(etc)
End Class
Is there a way for a subroutine to accept an instance of the class as an object, and query it for all these public items. I would search with google, but I dont know what to look for 
Any help, or pointers would be much appreciated!

I am fairly new VB.NET but I believe that the Reflection class can achieve this. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but inthe mean time you could try Google'in Reflection.

I'd say the best way to learn how one works is to study the source code of a good one. The best .NET one I know of is YetAnotherForum[^]. It's C# instead of VB but the logic behind it shouldn't be difficult to follow.
As probably a simpler example and as an article, you might want to see this[^]. That's an article describing the discussion board used on CodeProject.

How do I achieve this... say I have an array of bytes in my Java application.
Raises a HTTP connection to a server page say, Enroll.aspx.
I am doing a HTTP POST. I've got the data, but it's wrong somehow.
I think it's messed up the encoding or something.
Can someone advise on how to make this work? How would such a data structure be transmitted without modification?

In many other projects I've seen textboxes, say, where the very long string has been truncated with three dots added to show that it has been trimed - (This is a very long ...). I assumed this was a feature of .NET. It doesn't seem to be, though. Has anyone got any suggestions as to the best way of doing this?

I am developing phone application. Which will have a dial pad and a display.
In the display the customer wants to have details of (call duration, number being called, status when call is connected and disconnected).
Number being called should be in the top left, Status button left, call duration button right.
I am just wondering what is the best method to go about this.
I was thinking of making a new control and inherit from the text box class. And this textbox will contain the 3 text boxes I need to display the different details. That way they can be aligned correctly in the display.
Any other suggestions or ideas would be most helpfull,

Are these going to be editable fields? If not, use a label instead. Create a user control, place the fields where you want them and then put that user control on your form. Inheriting from textbox is the hard/long way around.

I have been working with a fair number of .VOB files (DVD format) that are up to 1 GB in size. When I use "delete" from Windows Explorer (or xplorer2) or "rm", it takes a very long time to delete the files. I have moved all the files I want to delete (and the directories they are in, into a single directory, and looking at it, I see there are over 40 GB of data to be deleted.
I thought I would write something that would run as a service or if not that, at least invisibly, to handle the job by watching for files to show up in a particular director, then deleting them at leisure.
However, in playing around with VB, I have discovered that I can programmatically delete files very quickly.
The way I do it is to open the file for write, then close it immediately. This makes it 0 length. I then close it, then delete it, and the job is done almost immediately.
My question is this... Is this method viable? Does Windows fix everything up later, taking care of deallocating the sectors, etc.? If so, what the heck is taking so long with the regular file delete from Explorer or a shell?
What pitfalls am I overlooking?

Perhaps a VERY fragmented volume. Try running Defrag on it once in a while.

I recently defragmented all my drives, but I rechecked just to make sure. The Windows defragmenter (in System Tools)tells me I don't need to defragment.
I just did a couple of tests on some .VOB files, using the rm from WinXs, and the files, sizes, and times to delete were:
vts_01_2.vob 1073739776
vts_01_3.vob 1073739776

rm -f VTS_01_2.VOB
Elapsed time: 00:22:27.609
>elapsed rm -f VTS_01_3.VOB

I timed these with a little command line utility I wrote. It's quite accurate. Note that rm does not use the Recycle Bin.
I am at a loss as to why this should take so long, as well as why the first one took over twice as long as the second one.
When I delete files from VB, using the method I asked about (open for write, close, delete), a directory containing 4 or 5 of these files takes only seconds to delete.
Any ideas?

This gets weirder. I thought perhaps I'd try a DOS 'del' command, and came up with the following:
vts_01_0.vob 167813120

Elapsed time: 00:01:39.203
So I retried the rm command supplied by WinXs, with the following result:
vts_01_5.vob 91742208
>elapsed rm -f vts_01_5.vob
rm -f vts_01_5.vob
Elapsed time: 00:00:49.016
Which is a quite acceptable time, and a far cry from the 22+ minutes I have experienced, though still much slower than my Open/Close/Delete method. I decided to try it again, and got:
vts_02_1.vob 125822976
>elapsed rm -f vts_02_1.vob
rm -f vts_02_1.vob
Elapsed time: 00:00:59.859
Still quite acceptable, but I think I'll keep on working on my DevNull program, which will delete anything dropped into a particular directory, and do it quickly.
I am now wondering if it has anything to do with the occasional slow launching I am experiencing. When it happens, I launch a program, the hourglass shows up briefly, then nothing happens. If I launch a few more programs, the same thing happens. After a few minutes (2, 5, occasionally more), al the programs I tried to launch will suddenly show up. I am running XP, Service Pack 2. I have Service Pack 3, but have not installed it yet.

Man, your machine's got issues. I'd try looking at virus problems next. That's the only time I've ever experienced that kind of time deleting a file.
