I have a normalized relational database that will power an HR application. The problem arises when I attempt to edit a gridview row where the foreign key value is null and the foreign key is bound to a dropdownlist from a lookup table. It is null because it is not required; for example, the position description id is null because it hasn't been created/uploaded yet or a stateid is null because the person is from another country. Don't want to argue the issue of null foreign keys; sometimes it is logical to not be required. Problem is when the Edit button is clicked it causes this error: Object reference not set to an "instance of an object". I can "jury-rig" the database by putting a blank record in each "lookup" table then putting that key value in the foreign key fields of the appropriate table but that's a bad solution for several reasons. So does anyone have a good solution on how to handle this in ASP.NET C# (which I am learning)? In good ole classic ASP it was a cinch. A logical approach to my "newby .net" self is to write code that essentially says "if (database record) stateid is null then don't bind the drop-down control; else bind it". Thoughts please! Thanks.

The object reference error shows that it is not binded,
therefore to stop this happening you need to run a check so that if it does find a foreign key which is null then check this and then disable the edit button.

Thank you but that doesn't solve my problem. The edit may be valid because there are other fields in the record that need edited. I need help on not binding the ddl if the foreign key is null.

Oh, if you read it and then pass it to your website, the Environment.NewLine in the string will be there, but you need to replace it with a <br/> tag for it to display in HTML. HTML ignores the newline.

Hi,
In my project i am using session mode stateserver. for maintaing sessions I am using other system's TCPIP address. I am not maintiaing state server in my system. If the given TCPIP system goes down because of any problem i need to provider other alternate system TCPIP address. any body please help me how to do this. below is my code in web.config.

Hi,
I need to call a webservice through javascript, i am using scripmanager(http://www.semenoff.dk/en/Code-Corner/ASP.Net.AJAX/WebService-From-JavaScript.aspx[^]....it was succesfful when i use webservice in my project..now i need to use a webservice which is running from another machine....i tried to give path to the serviceReference trough code...the path is something like this(http://165.8.15.10/myServices/WebServiceone.asmx), but couldnt solve it...Javascript throws error that "WebServiceone" is undefined.....i have googled and found that we can use .HTC and solve it..is there any other way? or..can anyone help me to solve this??

I am assuming this code uses AJAX to make the call. I would import the web service using the usual mechanisms so that you end up with a helper class in your project and you just call that.

Hi...thanks for replying.... i have written "ScriptManagerMain.Services[0].Path = autoFillService.Url;" in the Page_load event. where autoFillService is the object of my webservice....but it couldnt help me out..when i debug it.....i am getting the correct path into the path....can u help me ?

To be honest, I answered b/c the question was unanswered, I've not looked at this code. It doesn't use AJAX to make a web service call from code behind ? If it does, I am still all for adding a proper web reference and just calling it, then it's just plain AJAX.
