Thanks to everyone for the excellent suggestions. They really helped me.
I think that the code for the objects, which should have been deleted, still existed in the designer. However the controls were never being added to the form which is why I couldn't select them.
I was able in the end to get rid of them by editing the designer.

I have an client server application with SQL Server Express as backend database. The server application runs fine but when i run the client application, it hangs sometimes after 30 minutes and sometimes after 1 hour and so on. There is no problem with the code or the application itself but is there any known problem with the sql server express that freezes the application.
I appreciate even a bit of information because it is driving me crazy...

If the client and server are on different PCs, perhaps your network has issues ?

I've been given an old VB6 application and asked to create a modern version. It has so few users nowadays that I don't have to worry about them. So I have a free hand (within reason) to build it using easiest tools available.
Almost an ideal project, so I want to start out right, and set a standard for future developments.
What is the best platform to work with? VS8 Is my preference, but do you agree? What gotchas should I look out for (I haven't used it a lot yet)
I assume best practice, even for a small business package like this would be ASP.NET, right? What about a package of controls, like Teleric? Do you think they are worth the money? Which one does the best job?
Finally, what about generators, like IronSpeed. Are they worth the investment (money and learning time)?
Any suggestions/Advice, please.

Why is it best practice to move from a windows app to a web app ?
Good question. The answer might be: Ease of installation, Ease of updating, Possibility of making it (easily) into a hosted solution.
What downside to Web/ASP do you see?

I guess you have to define the requirements and how it needs to behave. Does it require a rich and responsive UI? If so, then the desktop is still the best bet despite AJAX etc. Does it need to be accessible from multiple platforms? Then ASP.NET is the way to go.
Note that if you go the desktop route you can deploy it from the web using ClickOnce technology. So that takes care of the ease of installation and ease of updating bit. The only other restriction is that the client must be Windows.

Nope. I gather you would probably need write your own implementation for this. I can't find a library that implements this.

When I run my app in the IDE the labels are aligned. When I compile the app and run it as an exe...some of the labels are not aligned - when moved to a non-vista machine...the same applies. I have the anchor applied correctly... anyone run into this and is there a work around?
note: sp1 for vs2005 for vista has been applied already.

to make an installer you can use visual studio 2005
make a new project the select other project types
select setup project
and then you have to add to this project an exe file of you application
and other files or shortcut on start menu or desktop
you can also put values and new keys in registry
when you finish
select build go to your project folder you will find a setup file in a folder called... i dont remember
any way this should work i tried it to make three setup files
but the problem that this installer does'nt work on a windows

It gives the Invalid CastException:-Conversion from string "select id,name" to type 'Double' is not valid.

Please try to use '&' instead of + sign.

I am working on a Vista DB Project at work. I had the same issue, well getting the SQL statement right. When i get to work in the morning I will let you know what I did. Also can you go into the DB and run a query? That is what I did to troubleshoot my SQL statement. One problem might be that you have to declare id as a double: Dim id as double. Also use & instead of + when using the id at the end of the string. Try that.

You could try to use the .ToString conversion on the integer.
eg, str = "select id,name from table where id="+id.ToString

Like I mentioned before I am using Vista DB at work and there is a sql built in, as my experience with databases is limited to the intro course in college. I have a db with 2 cloumns, one for serial numebrs labeled, serial_number, and one for what we call kanban_serial. I found it easier to use the underscore instead of using the quatation mark in my statement. So here is what I have, hope it helps:
Private Sub find(ByVal sn As Integer)
Dim sqlSN As String = "SELECT * FROM 'serial number data' WHERE 'serial_number' = & 'sn'"
I also use a section to delete a record from the db and here is what I have:
Dim d_SN As Integer
d_SN = CInt(txt1.Text)
Dim delete_SN As String = "DELETE FROM serial_number_data WHERE serial_number = " & d_SN
