I don't think Access would handle it, in my experience it tends to fall over after about 5-10 simultaneous connections. I understand MS SQL is probably out of range, so you could well look to RDBMS's like MySQL or even PostgreSQL. However, make sure you consider support, with a commercial product you do have someone to yell at when it all goes a little wonky!

On the other hand, possibly consider using the DB as nothing more than a reference. i.e. store the actual news articles in an XML file, and then format these using XSL. You can then store both of these in a table which would reduce the size down, and you could probably get away with the performance. Keeping entire articles in a DB is probably not a good thing anyway, let alone when you're limited to Access!
