I am trying to figure out a way to get different characters from different fields to auto-produce a string to display to a user on a web page. For instance, if you enter your name as John Doe and your SSN is 000-00-1234, then I want to be able to go to the firstName, lastName and SSN fields and get only the FIRST letter of the firstName & lastName and the LAST three of the SSN and put them together and add them to the userID field in the table (i.e. JD234). Right now, the SSN fields are split as ssn1, ssn2, ssn3, and are combined and entered into the SSN field as xxx-xx-xxxx.
I would also like the capabilities of creating an ID based on two different things. For instance, if they supply an employee number INSTEAD of an SSN (we are currently changing our ID naming scheme, but not enforcing it at this time), then I would like to take the FIRST letter of the firstName and the last (6) of the employeeID and create the userID from that...do I use an If...Then...Else to see which they entered and produce the ID? Keep in mind that I want to do ONE of the OTHER, but the new scheme (using the employeeID field) takes precedence. Anybody out there done this before?? Thanks for your help!

MySQL Has the following core functions:
connect(), query(), store_result(), fetch_[row, feild]() num_rows(), num fields(),
escape_string(), and close()
There are others, but those are the most used.
Data returned is all characters, and and you get to the data by:
row=fetch_row(query_result);
and row[N] = field N, it's that simple!
Is there anything that simple for ADO or ODBC? I'm trying to port a MySQL app to SQL Server, and having a hard time finding anything that simple. My real concern is handling user-defined queries. In MySQL it was as easy as:

Hi
I want to develope an client application to update/retrieve data from a remote database namely SQL on some maching over the Internet. For example, application to connect to TheCodeProject database to retrieve the appropriate data, format it then output it. In the essence, it just acts like off-line forum reader , without having open the browser and offer some extra functionality like saving, attaching files, etc.... However i m still in the dark of how about to do it. I would like to ask some questions related to the matter:
1) Is C# the most appropriate language to do this?
2) What sort of configuration does the MySQL server needs to apply for my application to make a connection?
3) I want to make the interface of the application Outlook liked, how would i do so?

I have windows xp proffesional.I install SQLServer2000 enterprise edition.When I wanted to install "SQL Server Components" it tell me it can't install server tools in this operating system and installed only client tools.
After installation I run Query analyzer.I have to connect to SQL Server.My compuetr name is 'MAZY' and I typed its name the name of server name.But when I clicked to connect to server I got this error:

The error message about not being able to install server tools actually means it coudn't install SQL Server. This is probably because you're running a desktop OS instead of a server OS.
You should have a second disk with the Personal Edition on it, which will install on your machine.
- SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition run on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server operating systems, Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5) or later, and Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition with SP5 or later
- SQL Server 2000 trial software and SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition run on the operating systems listed above for the Enterprise and Standard Editions as well as on Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with SP5 or later.
- SQL Server 2000 Personal Edition and SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine run on the operating systems listed above for Enterprise and Standard Editions, as well as on Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me), Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows 2000 Professional, and Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with SP5 or later.

I have a table with two BLOB fields...
If I read one blob (using GetChunk), modify, then write back (using AppendChunk), then read the other blob, modify, and then write this back, the changes made to the first blob are lost during the Update...
This can be fixed by reading the two fields and then writing them...
Is this a known bug in ADO/Jet???
(this is running on Win2K, Access Database, Jet4SP6)

I'm developing a site (under 10,000 more like 5,000  ), and I was trying to decide which database software I should use. I want to create a database for news articles. We didn't want to spend the money for SQL or any such software mainly because we are a non-profit organization and money isn't easily attainable. We do have licenses for Access, but is this actually the best way to go? And if you have any software recommendations or if I should try a different approach (not a databse) such as text files for each new article. I know of MySQL, but I am unfamiliar with it. We are using IIS on Windows 2000 Server. Your opinions, please .

I don't think Access would handle it, in my experience it tends to fall over after about 5-10 simultaneous connections. I understand MS SQL is probably out of range, so you could well look to RDBMS's like MySQL or even PostgreSQL. However, make sure you consider support, with a commercial product you do have someone to yell at when it all goes a little wonky!
On the other hand, possibly consider using the DB as nothing more than a reference. i.e. store the actual news articles in an XML file, and then format these using XSL. You can then store both of these in a table which would reduce the size down, and you could probably get away with the performance. Keeping entire articles in a DB is probably not a good thing anyway, let alone when you're limited to Access!

I have a text file that I am reading in from and want to store the information in a recordset until all the values in the text file are read in. I am using find to find the row to put the value into but once I update a value and do a movefirst I get an unspecified error.

I have also tried filtering without success. Clearing the filter gives me problems. I don't want the db that I am using to change so this recordset is essentially just a place holder until the text file is read in and the values are pulled back out of the recordset. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Or may be you need to test if you can update the recordset...

I put a m_pRecs->Update() and it caused the same unspecified error as the MoveFirst(). Just for my info. Doesn't the movefirst call update if the recordset has changed, I could be wrong that is why I am asking.

Could it possibly be the way I am assigning the value.
m_pRecs->Fields->Item["Value"]->Value = strValue.AllocSysString();
That is a general field in an excel spreadsheet. I have changed it to text and it acted the same.

I have some data in a XML format. I have successfully read the data in a dataset. Now I want to add that data in the database. Anybody have a clue?
I can succesfully do the other way (reading from the database and populate a dataset).

Question 2:
I dont understand the use of the "undo" file. I mean, before u bring the standby online, u're going to apply the last transaction log anyway. And I presume u BACKUP the last log WITH NO_TRUNCATE - so, all uncommitted transaction will be backed up.
And in this case, why do we need the "undo" file?
QUESTOIN 3:
I really dont understand:

I tried different options, and all resulting destination database became "Read only" whether i put them on "NORECOVERY" or "STANDBY".
I thought NORECOVERY and STANDBY assumes the same meaning as in RESTORE DATABASE WITH NORECOVERY/STANDBY.
In NORECOVERY case, I expect that I cannot even READ from the destination database (but, problem, I could read from it using SELECTs, in my little test?). In case of STANDBY, only read permitted, no write (okay, this has been confirmed and i have no problem)
And documentation for "Allow database to assume primary role" is as follows:
"Specify if the destination server should be setup to be able to function as a primary server."
what da?? All destination database has been marked "secondary" and "read-only" under database properties even after i checked the "Allow database to assume primary role" checkbox!?
what lousy documentation..
Help! Been reading on this all day and toying with it, but still havent found a clue as to why...

Hi
I'm using an Access database with the Jet engine for my application. There is a requirement for the user to take the database home (sounds like a job for database replication I here you say) and that would be great... However, the only documentation I have seen is in VB... DAO and JRO are the tools that the MSDN suggests but gives not examples.
I would like to provide this replication facility within my app and not have to force the user to open access and do it from there. can anyone help?

I've done that programatically in Visual C++ a few years ago. But don't have the code with me (I'll look for it, can't promise you anything)
There is an article un MSDN:

Wich is pretty good, the downside: is in VB, but you should be able to translate it.
Is totally doable.
