I have an application on a server that uses word templates to generate letters. When the client opens the application a query is made to a database, data is returned and that data is then inserted into bookmarks in the word template. The instance of word is opened locally so no office applications are actually installed or ran from the server; the templates are stored in a shared folder on the server.
I can open the template and print a letter, other user's get an exception not handled error, but if the application is actually on the local machine they are fine.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

What does this mean? If Word is not installed on every computer that is going to run your application, you're wasting your time.
You also neeed to copy any .DLL files you found in your Release folder to the other client machines in order for this to work.
What's the exception? What does the code look like where it occured and on what line?

The application is not installed on the local machine. The client wishes this to run from an application server and only use the copy of MS Word that is installed on the client machine.
The application on the server manipulates the data, and then calls to the client machine's version of office to insert the text and print the document.
Right now I cannot find what the exception is because from my box it works, and no one else has a copy of Visual Studio installed so I cannot debug from another station.
Other user's can use the application to access the stored procedures. It is just when they attempt to use Word. The application reads from a local Excel file into a dataset, so the server is communicating with the local machine without any .dll's being copied to the local box.

The .DLL's would be the Primary Interop Assemblies that the client side needs as a wrapper between the managed .NET world and the unmanaged COM world of Office. They are NOT optional files if you want to interop Word, which is what you're doing.

To copy the .dll's onto a user box
Where on the user's box would I need to copy the .dll's? I have had one user try just copying the entire application onto his box but with no success.

Everything you find in the projects bin\Release folder (*.EXE, *.DLL, *.config) goes into the same folder on the clients machine.

Can v play video & audio files like .mp3 , .mpg, .wav, .wmv etc.

You can use the windows media player control, or direct show to do this.

I recommend buying a book on VB.NET and working through it. If you don't know how to open a form, odds are you don't know enough to take any knowledge from the answers you will get here.
The answer is, you create an instance of the form class, and call it's ShowDialog method.

Christian is correct. If you can't work out how to open a second form from your main form, the rest is going to be neaerly impossible for you to learn on your own. Seriously, pick up a couple of books on VB.NET for Beginners so you can get an explanation of the basics. If you don't, you'll be completely lost in no time.

I need to replace the " in a string to a "", I'm not sure why this doesn't want to work:

strings are immutable. That means you cannot change them. The replace method returns the new string. The old string is not changed, it cannot be.
dc.ColumnName = dc.ColumnName.Replace(""", """")

Christian is correct, but the search and replace strings are wrong. This is what it should look like:
dc.ColumnName = dc.ColumnName.Replace("""", """""")
4 quotes for the search string and 6 for the replacement string.

Hi,
I am retrieving some values from database & populating them in a combobox.Prior to populating the values from the combobox,i manually added an item as "All" and i want that this item should be the default selected item(with index -1) when the values will be populated from the database into the combobox.
Can anybody help me how to do this..?

You can do that, provided you don't insist on the with index -1 requirement (-1 is used to mark the no selection state).
If you add te "All" item manually (and the combo has NOT the sort style set) then it will have index 0, hence you just select item 0 to perform the task.

But my requirement is that when the page will be loaded then the default selected item in the combobox should be "all"
i added "all" as
combobox.iteams.add("all")
now i want to make "all" as my default selected item of the combobox.

combobox.SelectedIndex = 0 should do the job for you.

Well hi everyone,
I have a problem with crystal reports...
the record selection formula in crystal reports helps to retieve a single row from the database (depending on the ID passed)
Now the problem is if have a selection criteria which demands to retrieve data from the databse for more than one ID so how will i pass multiple ID for selecting multiple row...please help..
Eg.
my selection crieria wud be prjID = 1
record selection formula wud be = 1
now if my selection criteria prjID = 1 and 4 and 6 and 9
hw ud i do it...
