The files had to be read and streamed by an ASP.NET HttpModule. It was working fine in the local environment. When we transferred and deployed the application to the hosting provider, files more than 20 MB proceed to download upto 90% without any hiccup. As if pre-programmed, the download halts at this and after a while, I get the message 'Internet Explorer can not download. The connection with the server was reset'. We were trying to look at ASP.NET Usage, TaskManager spiking or idleness of ASP.NET process (which would have deadlocked) but all these perfectly within a good equilibrium conditions.
