Have you tried using frhed to look at the raw contents of the disk? Very low level I know, you'll probably need to understand a bit about the file system itself but at least it'll help you identify whether it's worth delving deeper.
I have no idea what I just said but my intentions were sincere.

2. Is it like this if I wrote routines to access Sound Blaster it can play on every system.

No. It's a widely used card, but not everybody uses one. Many people have built-on sound cards on their motherboard, common known as AC97.

Sound Blaster[^] is the trademark name of sound cards made by Creative[^]. You should use the hardware-independent sound routines provided by your OS to write code that works on any sound card. If you want to write multi-platform code, see SDL[^].

Hi All,
We are starting a project (.NET/C# DB: SQL Server) and one of the main requirements is performance and reliability (the system is a "mission-critical" one).
Could you please indicate articles/books/sites that could help us on:
- Defining the minimum hardware requirements (how many redundant servers should be considered, RAIDs, etc.) based on the expected number of user/requests,ammount of data etc.
- Technologies that could be used in order to support the desired reliability ( distributed services, load balance for example)

Hi,
I have implemented in the code for wmi. It works just fine for cimv2 workspace and Win32_OperatingSystem class.
It is not working for any other class (i need Win32_CDROMDrive) in cimv2 namespace. Not even working for root/wmi namespace.
Is there anything else that I need to do?

The connection is completely seperate from the class your requesting. Does the connection work? Then you execute a WMI Query on that connection. If the connection works on one class, it'll work for every class, so long as the client machine supports that class AND has an instance of it to return.
We'd have to see the code your using to request this class to make any more recommendations.

My connection is made..in tha last step, after querying, uReturn value is zero, and loop breaks.
Where am i going wrong? I am a beginner in this. Please excuse if there is some silly mistake i did.

I have a problem with my fairly new Asus mainboard, it's a P5WD2-E Premium. If I set the Bios to enable the usb ports to run at 480MBs then try to boot with my USB keyboard and mouse attched, the computer locks up on the initial windows boot screen. My step dad had a similar problem with his Asus mainboard. Is this a common problem and/or is there a fix to it. Please help if you can, it's really frustrating.

p.s. My Bios is up to date, the problem has occurred before and after the update. I am using a microsoft wireless keyboard and a no-name optical mouse.

Hi,
I am trying to install windows 2003 Evaluation version on my laptop (Acer). The text setup works ok. When the system reboots, I can see windows 2003 logo for a little amount of time and then the screen goes blank; very similar as if I have shutdown my computer.
I tried flashing the ROM, but no joy. I think it has something to do with display. Can anyone help me out in this ?
I know there are couple of techies all round here...can anyone please guide me.

Sounds like you installed the wrong video driver. Restart the computer and press F8 during the POST to get the boot menu. Pick the safe mode option from the menu to boot in VGA mode. From there you can install the correct driver.

there are lot of things which might be wrong.
give some more info like.
are you able to install the OS completely?
if yes then
are you able to boot into safe boot if you restart?
if yes then
also try to boot by attaching some other monitor(CRT) also.
might be display is on some other device.
if still is doesnot work contact your acer vendor.
this might be the known issue for gfx driver on your platform.

Yes, I am able to install the windows 2003 text mode setup smoothly. The setup then reboots the system to start the GUI setup. I can see the windows 2003 logo for a short while and then the screen goes blank. However, the power button light continues to glow that means the system is still ON, but nothing comes on screen!!!
I searched for this case but nothing seems to work. I come to know that windows 2003 requires console redirection monitor but I didn't find any such setting in BIOS of my laptop.
I am unable to start in safe mode as well. I haven't tried using another monitor as I don't have one and I can't afford to buy one for this cause.
I tried using recovery console but even that didn't solve the problem. It seems like I may not be able to install W2k3 on my laptop.
The configuration of my laptop is Pentium celeron 1.2 GHZ. 512 MB DDR2 RAM. LCD Monitor, 40 GB HDD, DVD recorder, etc.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Hi Sameer,
When the system reboots after text setup( I think you are using unattended installation )and you see the windows progress bar at that time your graphics driver also is getting started so that OS can bring the system to High Res mode from VGA mode.
If there was some problem with sys BIOS or video bios than you wont see the post or windows progress bar. And graphics driver are part of your OS installation. I think there is something wrong with the Gfx driver configured for your gfx chipset. It may have some issues with ACER shipped platforms. It would be really difficult to point the problem without actually debugging  . I work on gfx drivers, i've seen and worked on similar issues but there can be 'n' reasons for this problem. I would suggest you not to tweek a lot with system and take help from your vendor of Acer because they will definitely help you here.
