If you don't know anything about programming, you better pickup a couple books so you can at least get started with the basics of programming and C#.
If you've never programmed before, creating an RPG game is WAY, WAY, WAY over your head.

Hi Gary.
The main reason I got into programming when I was younger was to develop computer games. My first game ever was a text based RPG game, similar to Dungeons and Dragons.
Don't get discouraged by the amount of reading you're going to need to do just to create the most basic computer game. In the end, it's pay off.
I don't recomend C# as your first language however. There's a steep learning curve when a newbie programmer tries to learn Java, C++, or C# and I've seen many beginning programmers give up on programming entirely out of disgust when trying to learn these languages. Start out with something simpler like VB 6 or vb.net (vb6 is the older version of vb.net). Then, if you find that you enjoy programming, go for the more advanced languages like C# or Java.

Hi,
I just installed VS.NET Beta1. But unfortunately if I start a new project with C# Windows Application, VS.NET Beta 1 hangs i.e the application is not responding. But others are working perfectly ( a Win32 application etc.,). Is there anything that i have do special for making C# Windows application/projects to work.
I am using WindowsNT Server edition with SP 6.0.

What I have done is that I've made a datalayer which returns a populated dataset and want to show it in my grid on my webform.
Using :

I know that the dataset that is returned is populated.

The subject of this message is quite relevant of my post!
I have an ATL or COM component to develop , and the question is : if i use C# to create the component desired, will it give more stability, performances or any improvement than a C++ development.
For instance, creating events in ATL object in C++ is not really easy (of course, when you have made it sometimes it comes easier,...) but in C# is it easier?
In ATL development, there are a lot of macros and sometimes you feel like you don't control all purpose of your development, is it the same way for C#?
Is there a good environment for the C# development?
Is C# use widely in nowadays development (it seems not!)?
In brief, why use C# instead of C++?

Just being new is not generally enough. There have been enough new technologies over the last few years to boggle even the most capacitive mind.
The benefits of C# for COM developers are best viewed in the broader discussion of the CLR:
The IL that .NET compilers generate (and which the CLR executes) is easier to generate and resolves to more optimizable code than Java ByteCode offers  . But even more importantly for traditional Windows developers, the CLR offers several benefits, not least of which is that the code your normal compilers generate is (usually) tuned against the lowest common denominator (typically the 80386) - with the CLR, it compiles code specifically tuned against the processor of the machine on which the code is run. This will result in a performance increase which will more than compensate for the small performance penalty exacted by the protection and safety mechanisms provided by the CLR's execution engine (which do provide an immesurably more reliable environment for your apps).
At the end of the day, as a COM developer (particularly if you're a C++ dev-head), the chances are that you spend more than 60% of any project writing and maintaining plumbing code. In C# (or any other .NET supported language) most of the plumbing goes away, leaving you to write your applications rather than custom marshallers etc.
Once you've spent more than a few days coding in C#, you'll never go back.

Hello,
I write a C# editor using a RichEditBox (in C# langage of course !!).
I want to add syntaxic coloration. I want to use the Select(),
SelectionColor() functions.
My problem is to know the actual Caret position: where is my keyboard cursor ?
I found some function like GetCharFromPosition,
GetPositionFromCharIndex, etc., but I can't retrieve the caret position with it.
What for technique should I use to get this value ?

You're looking for .SelectionStart. Sadly, though, the RichTextBox is not good at colorization. The larger your document gets, the slower colorization works.

Hi,
I am using ASPX file with embedded C# code. I have a Button Web Control that needs to call a C# method on the same page. This method will create a pop-up window with a calendar web control, let the user select a date, and return the date selected as a string. How do I write this method?

You can develop incredibly rich apps using WebForms where most of the processing is performed @ the Server and most validation & UI stuff is done in JavaScript on the client.
If you know your client is running .NET (remember it's going to be available for Win98, ME, WinNT, Win2K and WinXP initially), then of course you could develop a rich client-side WindowsForms or WebForms app, which consumes services from a Server via WebServices.

I'm in the process of trying to call our Verity COM object from within a .NET c# class. I successfully made a reference to the COM object from within VS.NET, and it seems to have worked in that I can see the methods and properties of the object. (from my reading, my adding a reference from VS.NET, it automatically takes care of creating the metadata necessary to call the COM object from within .NET as opposed to running the command line tlbimp.exe)
I am also able to create the object, and set some properties....however when trying to set some one object type to another, the compiler will not let me do it.
For example:
The Verity Object has a Vsearch class. A method in the vsearch class is called "GetResults()". The docs say it returns a "Result" Object.
So in my code, I create a Search object, a Result object, and then try to set my result object to the contents...like this
VerityIS.Vsearch mysearch = new VerityIS.Vsearch();
VerityIS.Result myresult = new VerityIS.Result();
...set some parametes for searching on mysearch, then execute the GetResults() method.
myresult = mysearch.Getresult();
The compiler complains that you cannot implicitly convert type "Object" to "VerityIS.Result"....meaning it sees the mysearch.Getresult() as returning just an "Object" type.
So then I try to use explicit casting.....
myresult = (VerityIS.Result)mysearch.GetResult();
The compiler let's me do this, without a problem. However, when I call this from within a ASP+ page, I get the InvalidCastException error message.
My question is, Is this a bug? Or, is there someway for me to identify the mysearch.Getresult() as the type of "VerityIS.Result" to the .NET framework??
