Liek I said, there's nothing native built into the .NET Framework 1.x. You'll have to use a 3rd party library or write one yourself. Be warned! In the case of object security, this is NOT easy. You'll be P/Invoking LOTS of Win32 functions to death! You'll have to rewrite all the structures involved and they get pretty complex.
You're best bet is to search the articles for "ACL" or "ACE" or Google for ".NET NTFS Security".

There isn't one!!! Alot of what needs to be done is so dependant on your environment, it's impossible to write one!
The Resource Kit gives you all the tools to do your own research and development into building your own RIS implementation. There is no hard-and-fast "this is what you do"! You have to develop your own solution based on your own requirements and environment.

i was wondering how to detect if a file is opened. i need a way to use the eventhandlers in windows which detect the opening of a video file in order to retrieve the path to that file and the process ID of the program that's running it
anything at all even if it's just something that you heard from someone or a vague recollection, i'd appreciate it if you could mention it.

Years ago when I did my first W2K roll out using RIS on a W2K server I had set the 'client computer naming format' to use the LAST 4 digits of the clients MAC address, plus some static text, "STATIC-NNNN". Since then I've changed it a number of times for different reasons. Now I am trying to set it back to what it was but for the life of me cannot figure out how to do it. Everything I read explains how to use the FIRST N number of digits, "STATIC-%4MAC", but I can find no mention of how to use the LAST n number of digits.
I have 30+ clients here, all named using the last digits of their MAC address. I know they were rolled out via RIS and they they were not pre-staged, so I know this worked at some point... Am I dreaming here or can someone explain how to do this?

Hi, does anyone know that bluetooth signal and wireless network signal could communicate with each other or not? For example, I have a wireless router which is used to connected and share an internet to the client. I have one laptop but i don't have a wirless network card. But I have USB bluetooth and correctly install its driver. Is it possible that my laptop could use usb bluetooth to connect to wireless router to access an internet?

This will only work if your wireless router had a BlueTooth interface in it. BlueTooth doesn't work with the normal 802.11anything wireless protocols.

Hi
I have been asked to monitor what websites employees in my company visit during work hours.
I had a program that I found from The Code Project, but it no longer seems to be working when used on one of the PCs, I need to be able to view the results as a web page.
Can anyone suggest anything that could work?

Yeah, just about any Proxy Server will do this, without running code on the users machine. The down side is any access to the Internet would have to go through this proxy server.

Hi all,
I've been told that a single process can only use a single cpu in a multi-processor set up. Is this true?
I have some code which is highly cpu intensive and I want to make sure I use all available resources on a multiprocessor server. If this is true, I'll need to spawn two processes to do this (for a two processor server).
Comments/advice appreciated!

Untrue. The operating system - if we're talking about Windows or any UNIX with thread support - will schedule threads on any available processor [*]. If you want to make use of all processors in a machine, you need to make use of multiple threads, but additional processes are not required.
When dividing your processing across multiple threads, remember that you need to protect access to any shared data. Try to minimise the amount of shared data - whenever one thread is accessing it, if you're using locks, any other thread that needs to access it will end up waiting until the lock is released. A task that requires a lot of access to shared data structures probably won't be amenable to parallel processing.
[*] Not quite true. You can constrain the set of processors that a thread can run on by using an affinity mask, but generally it's better to allow the OS to pick any processor. Windows has a whole bunch of heuristics that control which processor a thread will run on and which threads run at any given time - for details see 'Windows Internals, 4th Edition' by Mark Russinovich and David Solomon (MS Press).

Interesting stuff, and this is indeed good news. I didn't much like the idea of creating two processes to use two processors. I need to delve a bit deeper into this area. Apparantly what can also happen (I'm told) is when a single process is shared over two processors, both will only use 50% of their bandwidth serving it, so although the threads are split over two chips, the overall output is the same as just one running at 100%. Odd.
