Questionwwwroot$ - How do you change it? Pin
gmhanna14-Dec-05 10:10

Hi, I know I changed the definition of wwwroot$ when I first setup my system but I don't recall how I did it.

Let me explain my configuration and what is happening.

I am developing on a W2K machine using VS2003.net. The webserver (MSP-WEBSERVER) is another machine running Windows 2003 Enterprise Server. Something happened to the webserver this weekend whenever it went to serve up a page it would get memory read errors and crash.

I reinstalled Windows 2003 Enterprise Server and now I don't remember how I had things configured. The Server has two drive partitions C:\ for the OS and D:\development for my development projects. Under development I have additional directories for each project. IE: MCP, Buydown, etc.

I have added D:\development as my default website and added a "Development" website as well and added MCP and Buydown as virtual directories under the Development website. I'm not sure this is how it was configured, maybe the virtual directories were attached to the default website, i'm not sure.

When I try to access the initial signon screen of the MCP project, it displays perfectly (http://dev.merchantsoftwareplus.com/mcp). I signon, click "Authorization" and I get a page can not be displayed (404 error). Looking at the project in VS, it says the path name for the authorization screen is: msp-webserver/wwwroot$/mcp/authorization.aspx. BTW, it took me all afternoon just to be able to open the project, so I'm still not sure I have IIS configured properly, as I'm not able to open other development projects and I haven't been able to create a project.

When I try to create a project it says: The Web was created successfully, but an error occured when trying to configure the application root for this Web. Web projects may not operate correctly without an application root. The returned error was: Active Directory Services can not find the web server.

When I try to debug my project I get an error message saying the project is not configured for debugging, yet it is.

I backed up the configuration of IIS before I reinstalled but once you install, it can't find the backup files. I didn't format either Frown | :( - what good is backup if you can't restore it.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong and how do you configure this thing? Is there something that I can read?

*** UPDATE ***

I have moved the virtual directories under the "Default Web Site". This allows me to edit all of the projects, however I still can not debug. It says that I'm not a member of the debug group. I have tried adding just about every userid into that group and it still doesn't work. I even tried adding Everyone, still no go. Any ideas? This also did not improve the ability to create new projects.

Thank you,

Glenn
