Hi everybody. I got a short question regarding the CreateFont API. I use it like this to create a Times New Roman font of size 20 but the result is a very small Times New Roman font of a height of only 12 pixels. In Word or Notepad for example, when one selects a font of size 20, the result is a lot bigger. I must be missing some conversion maybe?

nHeight:
Specifies the desired height (in logical units) of the font. For all height comparisons, the font mapper looks for the largest font that does not exceed the requested size or the smallest font if all the fonts exceed the requested size.

That wasn't an answer. I read the documentation myself and I know that. However, if I increase nHeight indeed the font grows, but just a little. So how can I convert logical units (what-ever-that-means) to pt (the measurement used in Notepad and Word). You know that font selection dialogue? Where you chose the font size? Now... how can I create a font just like it was selected from there? ::- ).

Sorry cann't remember the calculation right now. The CreateFont() function says it takes the logical units of the font, which is usualy the point size.
So when you specify the height, you are not specifying the height in pixels, you need to do a conversion.
Ooh! I just found this:
lfHeight = -MulDiv(PointSize, GetDeviceCaps(hDC, LOGPIXELSY), 72); (index: LOGFONT)

Point size is a type setter thing, which has been a pain in may (BLANK) for years. I think in pixels, not point sizes. If you ever write a text/code editor under Windows, you'll understand.

I like pixels a lot more than pt but hey, that's the standard. So I had to take care of this. Thanks a lot again. You'll see yourself on the "Thanks to" list of the freeware application I'm working on next year when I'll start releasing public betas and final versions. So far I'm still in private beta testing ::- D.

I do not think that this is possible. Maybe... It might be possible to use SetThreadDesktop to switch a thread into the target desktop and then have it send the message?

HI
I have got one doubt. Is there any retstrictions to make an exe as Service.
I want to make my Server application exe as Service. That Server application is Dialog based application and it is for Client-server communication. when i am creating Service for this Exe it is creating Service and able to see that service name in Services of Administrative tools.
But unable to start it. it is giving error as 1053 : Service didnot respond to the start or control request in timely fashion.
Help me.

Hello,
You mean that you want to convert your dialog based application to be a service? So you have dialogs in you service? If this is the case, don't do it! The reason for this is that services should be able to run without the windows shell. You are restricted to kernel API's mostly. This is because this type of application is able run without any users logged on to the machine. If you use shell API's, your service might crash since those DLL's are not loaded.

Hi,
I am working on Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 VC++. I have created a solution & i am trying too build it & i am facing the following error:
LINK : warning LNK4001: no object files specified; libraries used
libcmtd.lib(crt0.obj) : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _main referenced in function _mainCRTStartup
Debug/MP1G.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals
When this error came i went to the properties in linker\system i changed the subsytem from Console (/SUBSYSTEM:CONSOLE) to Windows (/SUBSYSTEM:WINDOWS)
& in the advanced tab changed the entry point from mainCRTStartup to wWinMainCRTStartup.
But then the following error is coming:

I am not using .NET, but it sounds like you not have a main function your console application. If it is a console application then swhiching to it to a windows application will naturely generate more errors.

hi
i am creating a simple Win32 DLL on VS6.
The code is taken from one of the codeproject articles.

fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'stdafx.h': No such file or directory
I have even copied the stdafx.h file into the current directory but with no success.
In my settings i used "Not Using MFC" since it's win32 application.
Any kind of help is appreciated

Try right clicking on the line and there in the menu that pops up there will be an option to open the stdafx.h file. Try using that. If it fails then the header is not found.
Note: You must click on the line #include "stdafx.h"
Try this too.
You must use the include like this #include "stdafx.h" instead of
#include <stdafx.h>

I think stdafx.h file is included only in MFC-based applications.

stdafx is not a standard header file.
It is just included into your project by default.
Normally it acts as a container for other header files.
Like afxwin.h, afxext.h, afxcmn.h, etc.
So that they can be placed together at one place.
You will find a corresponding stdafx.cpp file too having just this single line of code
#include "stdafx.h"
Non-MFC applications won't be having them. Since they use SDK.

N.B. The stdafx.h and stdafx.cpp files are the default files used for precompiled (preprocessed) headers. They are used to improve build times when used correctly. If used incorrectly, they can cause you no end of heartache. Anyway, they have nothing to do with MFC projects...
If you right-clicked on the #include line for the file and still could not open it that way, it means that it is likely missing or in a different location than the one you expect.

If you have placed the stdafx.h file in the same directory as the project and you’re still getting those errors. Try a rebuild all.
