I want to use activex for communication with the server.
Here I want to download a sample file from server to the client machin as yahoo messenger does for download messenger.
Anybody knows..plz help.

Im having a problem on Session_OnEnd event. It doesn't sh0w accurate number of visitors online every time a user logs out. Is there any settings I need to do in my IIS or somewhere else to make my count updated/real time?
I believe that a session ends if session.abandon is executed, but why my system does not subtract visitors every time Session_OnEnd triggered?

Hi,
The problem with Session_OnEnd is that system doesn't exactly know when user left your page, so there is some timeout between last users request and Sesssion_OnEnd. So you can't show accurate number of online visitors...
But if you have 'logout' in your app you can use Session variable to store information if this user allready left your system and decreese number of visitors when he clicks 'logout'. If he just close browser window, Session_OnEnd will be called after some time.

Yes, I have logout in my app and Im using Session.Abandon. How will I implement a session variable? Currently im using Application("visitors") for storing number of online users in global.asa. Should I used session("visitors") instead and implement session("visitors") - 1 in logout page?

I mean that you could call same function (RemoveVisitor) from logout code and from session_end code. This RemoveVisitor function removes current user from count of visitors, but since it may be called twice it needs to check if it was already called:

Hi there,
If the test.dll assembly is managed code, then you need to use the Browse button in the .Net framework components tab, not in the COM components tab, to select the assembly.

I'm so new to HTML that I'm unsure of the terminology and how to accomplish what I think is something simple.
I would like to arange various elements on a page (images, links to mpegs, links to pdf's, etc) and expose the ability for a user to click a well defined region and then open that region in a new window where the user can then edit it.
For example there might be a page with 1 image and then a paragraph of formatted text under it. If the user clicks it I would like to open a new page, pass it the HTML of the current page. The new page will allow the user to edit the previous page and then saving returns the HTML changes from current back to previous where they get written.
I know this is GET and POST but that's all I know. Is there a short sweet example of how to do this somewhere? I am able to find definitions of GET and POST but nothing that completely shows how to approach this problem.
The summary of what I'm trying to do is allow an end user the ability to edit templates for their website. So if someone gets hired they can easily add that persons picture and resume to the proper place in the site as an example. Once I understand this process I'll stuff all the objects into a database and make it dynamic. This is a simplified question so that I can understand the basic nature of interaction between web pages and how you properly pass data back and forth.
{Steps}
1. Open resume template.
2. Click template edit region.
3. The template opens in a new window that has editing features.
4. All changes are made in the new window.
5. The new window passes those changes back to the old window.
6. The changes are written/flushed.
7. Editing session is over.
I hope this makes sense.

No I haven't. I think I might just stuff it into a database. Trouble is that doesn't help me short term. I need to be able to demonstrate the concept and when I do I won't have a database near by at all.

anyone know how to make a postback to an aspx page from javascript without calling any web control?
can i call __doPostBack() without passing any params ? i tried it but it didn't work

Hi there,
In fact, the __doPostBack() function generated by the ASP.NET is a wrapper of the submit method of the form element. So you simply get reference to the form element, then invoke the submit method to cause the page to post back.

hi all,
The present functionality is,
that there is a button to open a document in word and then we manually press file>print.
Required functionality is, there needs to be a button which will just print the page and close it, without displaying the page.
so, i'm opening the web page using:

so its not visible to the client, and onload of the form i'm giving a call to window.print(), then window.close().
also, i need to print a web page with out the header and footer on click of a button.
i tried suppressing header and footer using the following script, but not able to use, since it requires ActiveX on client machine enabled/prompt.

1. Not using client scripting or anything like that.
2. No, you can't detect the security settings. That would be a security breach.
If you want to change the users settings, either instruct the users how to change them, or supply a register file that they can run. If a script changed the settings in my browser, I would be pretty annoied...
What if the users are using a different browser?

I am sorry if i don't make much sense but this is because I don't quite know what i am looking for.
What I want to do is create a program that can play PHP based online game automatically. It will have to be able to exchange some data with the server so I assume that it is some kind of client application.
I was looking into doing this via IHTMLDocument interface and using some Java Scripts but i think it is not as straight forward as it might be.
any suggestions?

This is generally a bad idea, because it means you open yourself up to browser compatibility problems. If you must, then the first step is to view your source, so you can see what ASP.NET names your controls. Then you can use RegisterClientScriptBlock to inject jscript into your pages. Postback happens with a submit in jscript in your page, if you can intercept that, you can stop postback, but most controls can be stopped with autopostback=false in their attributes.

Dear group,
I am using the IE'API to get the font size of the text displayed on an IE. The class *IHTMLCurrentStyle* has got a bench of methods : get_fontSize, get_fontWeight, get_fontStyle.
Now because i will need to compare the size of elements on a web page, do you guys have any idea how to do that ?
as you can see get_fontSize() returns size in different formats (string, float ...), which will not allow me to do easy comparison between different sizes.
do you know how to get the font of text and perform simple comparison other than this way ???

Although the font size and style can affect the size of an element, there is no easy way of calculating the element size from the font size and style.
What are you going to use it for?
Perhaps you are looking for the IHTMLElement.offsetWidth and IHTMLElement.offsetHeight properties?

no i am not looking for the offsetWidth and offsetHeight.
I wana find out the size of the FONT of the different textual elements and compare them. After that, i wana sort them out according to the size of the font. For example, if you have two seperate paragraphs, how would you know which paragraph is written in bigger FONT regardless of the number of words in each paragraph !!!
i am not trying to calculate the size of the overall block, i am only trying to get a numerical value of the SIZE OF THE FONT used !!!
any ideas !!!

I see. You wrote that you wanted to compare the size of elements, that was what threw me off.
I don't think that there is a way to get the actual size that is used to draw the text. I don't think that you even can get the actual font that is used to draw the text. The style information only contains what is the desired font, size and style of the text. If the computer does not support that setting, it will choose one that supposedly is as close as possible. For example, if the font specified in the style is not installed on the computer, it will choose another font.
To furter complicate the matter, font sizes isn't always comparable across fonts. For example Verdana 10px looks a bit larger than Times New Roman 10px.
