In my opinion, I think this is no a logic way to block the user from accessing drive C:. If you are using windows xp professional which format with an NTFS partition, you can use the folder level security to prevent the user to access the drive or folder that you want to restrict. Try to read this[^] article from Microsoft about managing file and folder level security. Remember, set up a wrong file or folder permission will cause you a problem. If you have a lap machine, try to test it first before implement this technique with the real machine. Good luck

It doesn't need any special script. Just go to command prompt and type the comand ver then it will display the operating system version. But if you want to integrated it with the setup process, i think you should output the result to any text file and let the setup process analyse it.

There is a Win32 API that returns this info - GetVersionEx. You should be able to declare the API and call it from InstallScript, but if for some reason you cannot, create a DLL in C++ that determines the info and call your cuistom DLL from InstallScript.

Have to add some Load Balancing to IIS so if an IIS server goes down the web app still works. Now, if I add a Load Balancing computer in front of those 2 machines, what happens when the Load Balance goes down?

The Windows Load Balancing service is a multimaster system - there is no single front-end. See the Network Load Balancing FAQ[^].
If you have separate front-end hardware that performs load balancing, see that product's documentation.

First, thanks so much for the reply.
Still I had this issue after reading the FAQ. To create a cluster you need an unique IP where all IIS requests go. Then from there, they get distributed to different computers. What happens when the first IP computer where all requests go dies?

The unique IP address is shared among all computers in the load-balancing cluster. IIRC, they fake a MAC address for the cluster and program their network cards to recognise that MAC address as also being valid. When an ARP request comes in for the shared IP address, at least one computer will respond with the cluster MAC address - the sender on the local segment then sends packets for the shared IP to that MAC address. All the servers will therefore receive it.
By the use of the heartbeat packets, the servers partition the space of request addresses between them. Only the server which is responsible for that requester will have the Load Balancing driver pass the incoming packet to the application - the other servers will simply discard it. The partitioning is self-tuning.

That work very well, so when a computer goes down the other one takes over!! Awesome.
However what about when IIS goes down? The packats still arriving to the computer with a IIS down and displaying a NO PAGE FOUND. Any way to check if a service is up and if its not taking it out of the cluster?

Hi There,
First of all I know very little about VB.Net. I have just bought a book in VB.Net 2003 and have finished some of its chapters. I have done programming years ago. Like QBASIC, PASCAL and COBOL. I want to get back into the programming scene. At present I work as a Network Admin for a small public school. I am keen to build an application to manipulate Active Directory using something like LDAP. I have located several VBScripts to add users, groups just stuff like that. I want to create this for our school and to other schools that this would really benifit. I want to do this as a project and not to gain any money. Could someone please help me build such an application. Please contact me for more info

A simple way is to make a Installer of the application with the option of putting the application in the StartUp folder under windowsXP
Otherwise,If you have a very good knowledge of Windows Registry,(make sure to have registry Backup before editing it)then you can add the add a new startup application using the following
Open your registry and find the key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run].
For your Program to run,create a new string value and set the value of the string to the program executable.
For example, to automatically start Microsoft Paint, add a new entry of "Paint"="c:\windows\mspaint.exe".

Hi there,
I've got a new A0-plotter (HP) but this silly thing cannot arrange jobs. So it wastes a lot of paper even if the printing format is smaller than the plotters paper size. It has to be driven with HPGL2.
Does anyone know a plotter server program, that is able to combine HPGL2-jobs together, arranging them in a manner to save paper? The files have to be probably rotated by 90 degrees and given an appropriate offset to put e.g. 4 x A4 in one line.
The program has to understood HPGL2 and has to be able to rotate and shift the data.
Any helpful softwareparts known? HPGL2 seems to be a problem for this task as I was told. Can't believe that.

I have a network with several Windows 2000/XP clients and a Windows NT 4 domain controller. There is also a new Windows 2003 (active directory) server, that is the Primary Domain Controller of a *different* domain. The ultimate goal is to migrate all clients to the new 2003 domain and eventually remove the aging NT machine from the network.
The following steps have been performed:
Log on to the client machine as local administrator and join it to the new domain.
Restart the client and log on to the new domain as a domain user (to create the new profile).
Log off the client and restart the computer.
Log on to the client machine as local administrator and copy the users old profile (from C:\Documents and Settings\...) into the newly created profile.
Add the new user to the machine as a local administrator.
Restart the computer and log back on as the new domain user.
At this point, all shortcuts and programs seem to be present. However, the layout and behavior of the desktop, appearance of the start menu and several other items are different. Furthermore, email (Outlook 2000) folders can no longer be located and user priveleges seem to be restricted. It seems that while the files and folders are copied correctly, the file permissions and registry are not.
How can I migrate a users local profile when moving from a Windows NT 4 domain, to a *different* domain on a Windows 2003 active directory server?

I seems like you have the saster worm or plaster or any worn that do this ,chech your pc from symantec , and the temporary solution to this to avoid shutdown ,is when the timer is counting down ,type at the command prompet : shutdown -a ,, this will abort the counting and lets you free for the next restart :->.

I think your computer is affect with the virus. Try to use any anti-virus software to scan from the boot CDROM or scan from the internet.
