I'm new to ASP development and I have been working with the Whidbey beta 1. I have a gridview control bound to a sqldatasource and have added an unbounded checkbox column for selecting certain gridrows. The problem is I can't get the checkbox value in code. I'm using VB.NET and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I had to create a template column for my checkbox on the gridview. Here's what it looks like:

Hello all - I need your help.
I am using classic ASP 3.0
I have a web app that will not connect to the Access database.
Error:It is already opened exclusively by another user, or you need permission to view its data. - And no else is connected to it yet. I am not using Interdev at the time of error- just IE 6.0 but it happens when Interdev is opened as well.

The web app and the db are on separate servers.
The details: Web server IIS 5.0 on a Windows 2000 platform.
The database is on the PDC - Primary Domain Controller - WIN NT
The web server is a member of the domain. THe PDC is a Windows NT server. THe IUSR_websvr account has full control rights to the database and its parent folder and that user is a member of the domain. It also has full control rights to the WINNT folder on both machines - web server and PDC. THe web app security is anonymous access and allows IIS to control the password.
The database includes tables linked to another database in the same directory. The Link path uses the fully qualified server path.
The provider string in the app also uses a fully qualified path:
conStr = "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;DATA SOURCE=\\Rdt_bdc\Training Tracker\trainingmonitor.mdb"
Ok I hope that I provided all the clues. When I start the web app it looks like it is trying to connect for about 10 seconds before it errors out. I believe that it is a permission problem but I do not know what I missed.

By any chance, do you open the database more than once in that page? If so, make sure it closes before you try opening it again.
Another thing you may want to check is if anyone has the database open in an Access window. I know you said that no one else was using it, but just to make sure...you know. Lastly, try opening the database right after you get this error. Does Access give you a similar error?

Hi all,
I am trying to two things but am unable to do them.
1. I am trying to dynamically add some element in the HTML page with the help of createElement function. I am able to that correctly in IE but not in Netscape 4.7 I refered the javascript reference which says that createElement is not compatible with Netscape. So what is the other way round to do it.
2. Also I am trying to make a div element fixed in the page. That is even if I scroll down the page the div element which is a type of layer does not scroll down. It is possible in IE as:
document.getElementById("divname").style.pixelTop = document.body.scrollTop;
but it is not possible in Netscape4.7 as netscape does not support scrollTop. What is the other way round to do it.
Please help.

Do you mean: How long would it take to retrieve one row from a table using SQL Server 2000?
It depends on a number of factors. The size of the rows, the index you are using in the filter (the WHERE clause of the SQL statement) or even if there is an index, disk contention (the HDD is a shared resource, other applications will be using it, along with potentially other users of the database) and so on.
If you want to gauge performance of your database then you just have to measure it. Certain things will obviously speed things up. e.g. Placing an index on the columns you are searching on will speed up SELECT statements. Removing indexes will speed up INSERT statements. You have to balance your needs.

I need to know how does one prevent a user from submitting a form in classic asp twice? My page AddClient.asp has all the input fields, and when done, goes to the AddClientProcess.asp page where addition to the database is done. The data type for the id used is auto-numbering. So lets say the user presses the refresh button then the data gets added again becuase of auto numbering.
And how is this done in ASP.NET as well?

Add an OnSubmit handler to your form. In that onsubmit handler, simply make the submit button disabled.
EX:

It seems that for some reason, the JavaScript function encode() returns an ASCII encoded string regardless of the pages explicit setting to 'utf-8' (I'm testing in Exploder 6).
This means that the ASP.NET Request object will dismiss all the special characters encoded as '%XX', because it expects them to be in the form '%uXXXX'.
Does anyone know, of the correct method to use for encoding to UTF8?
