The problem is not and has never been a Chris Maunder 1-vote. I know that you would never vote 1 in a mean-spirited or troll-ish way. The problem is the many members here who have no respect for other members. A 1-vote is just another toy for these people.
I would like to leave you and other responsible members the ability to 1-vote, because I do understand why you want this. But the anguish that 1-voting causes is not IMHO worth it. As Nish says, the site would be better off without it.

Bronze is too low. I think you become Bronze just by spending a day or two here. Silver and higher (and Silver in at least 2 categories, for further filtering).

My sense is that Nish is right, bronze is way low. I'll be happy with whatever you decide.
Let me ask this: is it possible - in special circumstances - to set this threshold on a per-member basis? If a - say, gold - member starts throwing 1-votes around, would it be possible to prevent him from doing that, without affecting other gold members? Just thinking this might be a helpful tool.

I second this.
Now that you can see what reputation a vote comes with, I've been quite surprised by how often it's a gold or platinum guy that votes you down without any provided/valid reason!
People blame the new bronze signups, but often enough, it's some of the seniors here who indulge in petty voting games.

Heh. I'm thinking of the James Bond film Goldeneye, where they sent a "spike" to mess with the other guy. I think platinum members should have the ability to send a spike to 1-voters.
What you're saying makes sense, though. Recently I was shocked that John C started 1-voting people who were annoying him in a thread, as if he thought the thread was his own personal property. I think anyone can have a bad day, and that includes senior members. If that happened to someone in my family, I would step aside with that person, and ask what was going on. Anonymity appeals to the dark side.

No thanks. If a gold member starts throwing around 1-votes it's usually with a reason. However, if a gold member is on a rampage then his account gets suspended. I simply do not have the resources to manually tune that number of accounts.

I've just modified the code so that those with Silver status in "Author", "Authority", "Editor", "Organiser" no longer have restrictions. I'll have this update posted tomorrow.

Check the Indian forum out to see what it means to discuss the match live, the volume of posts is pretty high.
On the other hand, I may have missed some other cricket discussions threads that were posted in the Lounge.

What are you talking about?
The USA vs Canada Cricket match that people are talking about in that thread happened in 1844! I assume that you mistook that to be a reference to a current game happening in the world cup? If so I understand why you may have got upset.
As I said, I intent to keep the world cup discussions out of the Lounge.
But that does not mean I will never ever mention Cricket in the Lounge. Even after the world cup's done with, if I find something interesting to post about Cricket (like say an American cricket league**), I will post about it.

This is exactly why we need a sports forum. If a reasonable person like yourself doesn't understand when the line is crossed, there's no reason to think others will.

I did not 1 vote you. But it's ironic that you are talking about immaturity after complaining about one "humorous" thread in the Lounge.
Check out the Indian forum. Every match thread gets 100s of posts, and when India played, there must have been at least 500 posts in 6-7 threads (despite an official 1 thread rule I originally suggested there).

That's the one correct thing you've said. I don't want to know, and I don't want to see this stuff in the Lounge. Ok, not sure if you know this. But Canada, a country where there are less than 1000 people who even know what cricket is, is playing in the world cup. By definition, that bit of info is about cricket. At the same time, it's clearly a topic that will interest people.
I find it a little weird that my thread irritated you so much, but the daily CCC threads that run into pages are apparently not worth of even a mention here?
Once again, you are ignoring the context. Say I play cricket today and I get injured. Based on what you are saying, I should not post about my injury in the Lounge? Because that would mean I'd have to mention the word "cricket" ?
Once again people who are responding to my thread and mentioning the USA-Canada game from 160 years ago are doing it just to show that cricket used to be played here when the British effect had not fully worn off.

Not in the least. You could:
- not mention the context of your injury at all;
- just say "during today's out-door game";
- be more specific and call it "today's bat-and-ball team sport";
- be pretty accurate and say "in today's performance of an ancient but silly ball game, the one with the never ending and incomprehensible set of rules, at which Canadians nor Americans excel in the least, so I prefer not to mention it by name on an international web site";
- or just name it and bear the consequences.
Anyway, I wish you recover well and never feel the need to mention it again.
