Any chance we can make the SoapBox viewable only to members to limit viewers, especially the younger kind, from seeing it? Having it hidden may also make CP look more appealing to those who get turned off by such silliness.

Amongst all "bad" the things kids could find on the internet the Soapbox doesn't even rate. What the hell is it with all the "ban the box" people? If you don't like it don't go there. I like it so I go there. Simple. It called freedom of speech.

This is an IT site after all. Why do we ban people or require them to log in first to post? This is just another deterrent AFAIC.

Because people abuse message boards. If the world was perfect then people would show maturity and consideration from others and not pretend that hiding behind their monitor absolves them from social responsibility.

My rental apartment's resident database software app does not support non-US zip codes for previous addresses. So they could not enter my Toronto address. And had to enter 00000. Really weird design in my opinion!

I would like to suggest that you embellish the Java section of the CodeProject site a bit more. Maybe put the Java Programming as a top level menu, instead of under the Platforms menu section. It's hard to find. I'm sure your site gets plenty of traffic and I'm not sure if you really want to increase your traffic a lot more, but I think you would gain significantly more visitors if Java programming section was embellished a bit more. I am not a huge fan of Java myself, being a professional C++ programmer for over 10 years, however, I am often handed Java code and projects, and would like to be able to find my Java needs quickly and easily on the CodeProject over any other code repository site. Thanks for all of your great excellent work keeping the CodeProject on the net!

I heard that there weren't enough people who used Java, so CP took the Java Forum down.
I agree, if CP would "embellish" Java a little bit more, maybe they would get more traffic. I'm sure a lot more people use it now than before!

We made a conscious decision to focus solely on Visual Studio and .NET related technologies and so deprecated all our Java content.

When a post is deleted it's children become children of the deleted post's parent. i.e.

I've seen at least one person do this intentionally. It obviously has abuse potential.
I'd also like a feature where when you quote someone the quote can't be edited; only removed. This may be a little trickey. The reason I request this is that the same person who deleted his post also misquoted me.

I agree. A post shouldn't be deleted. EVER. All the text should be removed and replaced with a "Post Removed" message.

I just saw a terrific new article where one of the raters gave him a "1" and left no message. I strongly think we should REQUIRE a message or comment from anyone who gives an article a low rating. Here's the article I'm talking about - this is VERY GOOD:

I've seen this kind of thing at other sites where the rater simply uses a swear word as a comment, or they make some kind of stupid statement that has nothing to do with the article (C# sucks, Bill Gates is the devil, etc).
If an author sees that he got a low rating from one of these bozos, that rating should be thrown out! I'd be willing to accept the rating of any poster who at least has the courtesy of posting some kind of comment relating to the article, but idiots who clutter our bandwidth with pure "noise" need to be shown to the door!

It won't work. The voter would just put junk into the box. The best thing to do is ignore the low votes. A very good article will always end up with a good score and constructive feedback in the articles message board.

I understand and that's my point: if they put junk in the box their vote shouldn't count. Anyone who hasn't really read an article and thought about it at least a little bit shouldn't be voting in the first place. I'd let the article authors submit those "questionable" entries for review, and a third person could take a quick look and kill the vote of someone like this.
This is one of the best developer sites on the internet (in my mind second only to MSDN), but there's a certain number of jerks who give artificially low ratings and post stupid messages that put off a lot of potential article authors.
If I want to give a guy a "1", I think I owe it to him to give a little constructive critism, or at least to point out what I think is wrong with the article. That helps us all in the long run because his next article might be much better. But if I give him a "hit and run" rating of "1", he's not going to learn anything from it.

It would be good if the Mobile Dev forum was visible on the pulldown menu on the front page of CP. I think a lot of people might not realize it exists since it is not available from the front page.

I have noticed some good articles in the String[^] section being unedited for more than a year. Is it a general policy to leave them unedited, or authors ask for it, or this section is simply low on the editors' priority list?
