In this case, yes. It was a spammer and the only way to remove it properly is to remove the entire thread.

Here is how to reproduce it.
1) On some Answer, click "Add Comment";
2) Put some comment #1 and post it;
3) Immediately after, click "Add Comment" again;
4) Put some comment #2 and post it;
5) Try to edit comment #2: locate Edit icon of comment #2 and click it => edit control shows comment #1 instead of #2.
Used: Mozilla SeeMonkey v. 2.0.11, Windows XP SP3.

A couple of times recently, I have answered a question, only to have the question be deleted, presumably because the OP has his / her answer and doesn't want anyone else to benefit.
The thing is, this is rude: it stops anyone else with the same problem finding a ready-made solution, and duplicates work - sometimes work which has taken a good chunk of time. You can't even send a message to the OP to ask them not to do it again, as even the username is no longer available.
You can't delete a whole thread in a forum when there is a reply, so why should it be possible to do it for a Q&A question?

Fully Agree.
If there is an Live Answer (i.e. one that has not been deleted) present, then the OP cannot delete their question.

This person[^] spamming in the Java forum.
I must get a clever new signature for 2011.

If possible, I would vote against them.
I can see significant improvements in site usability, thank you very much.
Can you understand why scrollable areas inside page are difficult. Who cares if the whole page is a bit too long -- general scroll does it all. But nested scrollable areas hide part of text and require extra clicks. That's much more annoying. Please try yourself.
Thank you very much for understanding.

JSOP recently posted a question: what level does -16 debator points on a 1 vote.
I tried to find out:
I took a snap-shot of his rep points, one voted him, shap-shot, and then changed my vote to a five.
Before: 38,101 62,040 87,012 2,929 597 1,676 7,920
1-Vote: 38,101 62,040 86,996 2,929 597 1,676 7,920
5-Vote: 38,101 62,040 86,996 2,929 597 1,676 7,920
So I do a -16 with an MVP/29,310 platinum debator.
Interestingly, when I change my vote to a 5, he didn't get the points back, let alone any extra points for a 5 vote. It doesn't appear to be time based, as five~ten minutes later he is still below the original value, having added one point for another question.

Hi Chris, it's the same behavior in both IE9, FF4 and Chrome 9 too. I checked in my PC.

19 moderators!!!
Fine it's allowed and there is no restriction but shouldn't it be little (actually more than little) specific on who can & who cannot be moderator? Also, I believe some responsibility must be attached to it and having so many is like having none!
Chris, is that ok, acceptable in a practical scenario?

I dont think there are 19 moderators - only members.
But Chris might need to confirm this.
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it.

Not really. Only 2 mods, the others are there so they can participate in the forum and bring any issues to the attention of the mods.
That said I think we need to remove the inactive ones there.
