Nowdays employers want to see that a devloper can hold down a position for a decent (>1 year) amount of time instead of being the fly-by-nighters that predominated a couple of years ago. Searching for and hiring employees is an expensive and time consuming task and employers want to ensure that they do it as infrequently as possible.
My personal feeling is that .NET (in terms of Web development) has a HUGE future. If you want to try C# and love web stuff then look for ASP.NET related stuff.
Otherwise if you're still in Toronto and want to work for as many CodeProject T-shirts as you can wear then send me an email  (I'm guessing you'd rather pay the rent though...)

I have a few questions about exams for MCSD with VC++...
-Is the first exam(70-016) all multiple choice?...or are there questions that have to be answered with straight sentence answers?
-Why aren't there that many schools offering MCSD courses with VC++...most of them have it with VB. Does that mean VB is superior programming language? Is it better to be MCSD with VB instead of VC++?

All exams execpt 70-100 are all exclusively multiple choice ...
VB is a piece of crap (I'm not talking about VB .NET) , they just offer VB , because it's much more easy ...
The Vc++ tests aren't very difficult if you have working experience with it ... if not buy yourself a decent VC++ book, buy VC6++ Exam Cram from Coriolis and learn as much you can , if you are still interested in VB , there is also a Exam Cram about VB6 on Amazon. Check the certification topic on Amazon.

I'm an MCP VC++6 so let me tell you something if you are patient and the kind that never give up so you can choose VC++ it's more than powerful, perfect in fact .. otherwise VB is a nice tool and not time consuming but of course less powerful than C++ or VC++

I know that the IT field is down. But there are rumours that things are looking better in the US. Does this mean the chances are better for quality 3rd world coders to land up H1B jobs?

Well, one thing for sure, here in Portugal, it's not that difficult and the pay isn't the lower , normally the entry level is 17457,92 euros a year and since the life's cost is one of the lowers in europe, we programmers can have a decent life

Things in the US still good for good programmers like you. Of course companies are very careful right now in who they offer a job.
In the jobs posted companies are not offering relocation or H1-B visas, even friends of mine with TN visas have problems finding jobs.
Anway, somebody like you won't have a problem getting a job in the US. However, would you like to wait for 3+ months for your H1B, while doing paper work and then when you work for the company to know the you cannot move companies?
Oh! When dotcoms were going down and closing doors, many, many H1B with wifes and kids had to leave their houses and cars in 10 days to go back to their countries. In 10 days is very difficult to sell a house, 2 cars and pull your kids out of their school.
Just something for you to think about it!

It's not an American craze or anything with me. If I could get similar conditions here in Trivandrum, I'd be happy to live the rest of my life locked in a room. But I want fast computers, big monitors, fast internet access, complete legal software. All this is highly improbable in India

What internet access do you have there? T1, T3, DSL, cable modem or 56K dial up?
I love programming, but I couldn't actually be happy lock up in a room!!

Last October [2001], my company tried to send me out for a couple of months on a Business Visa. It was for the initial design and system study of a new project. Maybe October was a bad time to apply for a Visa, because of the Sep 11 attacks. My Visa application was rejected. I was quite disappointed as you might expect. Anyway Business Visas are not easy to get. I think the work-permit Visa [H1B] is a safer option.

p.s. I have not applied directly to an US company for a job. I have sent my resume to one company though. A few people have directly offered me contract jobs. But none of them ever made any solid or safe offers. I mean, I can't risk simply going there only to have to return 2 months later and then I'll be unemployed here as well.

At present, I think it is best to stick to your job and get as much experience as possible together with the certified courses. Moving to the States or UK is not looking that good.
They say it is picking up but I can not see that at present as I have a lot of working experience and just been made redundant. I have been applying but no response so far.

I have a full-time job developing software. In my spare time I have developed several programs that, in my humble opinion, have some commercial value. I would like to sell these programs on the internet but have no clue how to start. I know of companies like DigitalRiver that sell the software for you.
Do you guys have any experience selling your own software. Do you actually sell copies or is it not worth your time. Do you sell the software yourself or do you use a third party.
Looking very much forward to your reactions. Any reaction is welcome, I am looking for a broad discussion.

My husband & I have been trying to find jobs in Raleigh, NC. The job search has come to a halt since there is nothing. He has a master's in Comp Sci, and I have my bachelor's in Comp Sci. He is a genius, programmed in Java, C, VC++, and OpenGL. I "get by", programmed in Ada (yeah, we're defense contractors) and VC++. We are tired of paying someone else's mortgage and wish to return to the South. It just looks so bleak. I am getting to the point where I think we ought to just concede and buy a house in NOWHEREsville. What do you think? Am I overreacting? Impatient?

I'm in southern MD (Patuxent River) working for a defense contractor. We know we're good as long as we stay here, but we aren't interested in doing that.
